INFINITI Motor Company, Tennessee State University, and the Black Automotive Media Group Unite to Host Automotive Internship

Nashville, TN – A unique collaboration has been created for Tennessee State University (TSU) students interested in covering the automobile industry from a media and communications perspective. Dubbed The Driving Force (TDF), the Black Automotive Media Group (BAMG) sought out minority applicants from the Tenn.-established HBCU to participate in a 10-week, field-credit academic program that commingles virtual training, mentoring sessions, and in-person product experiences.

Supported by INFINITI, TDF guidance is designed to expose interns to opportunities as journalists, PR executives, and business professionals covering the auto industry.

“We thank INFINITI Motor Company and the Black Automotive Media Group for including TSU in this innovative partnership to benefit our students,” said TSU President Glenda Glover. “The automotive internship program gives TSU students access and opportunity to establish a successful career path in a leading industry.”

Participants will be able to showcase their work within various multimedia platforms at the end of the program. More importantly, they will interact with INFINITI guest speakers ranging from designers to product planners.

“As the Director of Academic Career Pathways and Partnerships, we are excited that our scholars have an opportunity to participate in this virtual internship with the BAMG and INFINITI,” stated Antoinette Hargrove Duke. “Our goal is to prepare TSU students for the real world and we believe through this experience, they will receive the practical training needed to close the skill gap before transitioning from college to their chosen careers.”

For the Spring 2023 academic session, TDF wholeheartedly welcomes the cohort of HBCU students from TSU. The program would not be possible without the commitment and resources from INFINITI.

“It’s imperative for organizations to cultivate the next generation of minority leaders, and we are honored to be part of this internship program,” said Craig Keeys, group vice president, INFINITI Americas. “The Driving Force internship at TSU gives students important opportunities to develop their skills, and helps organizations like INFINITI to identify individuals who can excel within the company’s staff.”

TDF is led by respected media specialists Kimatni D. Rawlins of Automotive Rhythms Communications, publisher Randi Payton, and Greg Morrison from Bumper2Bumpertv, with additional support from an array of Black automotive journalists and publishers.

“The goal is to continue expanding learning opportunities for scholars focusing on paths steered towards automotive communications,” stated Randi Payton, BAMG member and publishing pioneer. “I extended my media career by founding African Americans on Wheels magazine, which introduced thousands of journalists to automotive career opportunities. I am happy to continue that legacy with The Driving Force.”

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Epicly Talented and Sporty Family SUV

It was an insightful media trip to Franklin, TN to visit with product planners, communications professionals, and Mitsubishi Motors engineers for a deeper understanding of the newly released 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The sporty and family SUV PHEV, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, has a combined driving range of 420 miles. If you decide to cruise around town in EV mode only, the battery affords the Outlander 38 all-electric miles. The Japanese seven-seat, three-row SUV is a winner for consumers looking for a crossover utility blessed with talent, sporty styling, rugged capabilities, and extended range.

From the time the reimagined gasoline model hit the scene last year, the company’s 330 dealer partners across the United States have been engaged and selling Outlanders like holiday cupcakes. We are not sure why Mitsubishi took so long to reinvigorate the product, but they are no longer a forgotten brand. Of course progress must continue to take over the consciousness of auto buyers since Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota come to mind in the value SUV market. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi is aware of its disposition and attacking the airwaves with product announcements and marketing campaigns to win over potential new buyers. Furthermore, if an all-electric vehicle is not in your foreseeable future, a PHEV may be perfect for your lifestyle in preparation for the impending mobility shift.

“Since its launch in March 2022, the gasoline version of the all-new Outlander has been a homerun, setting sales records monthly even in the face of global supply challenges,” said Mark Chaffin, MMNA president and CEO. “When sales begin in the U.S., the 2023 Outlander PHEV will take its place as the flagship of the Mitsubishi fleet. It is the most advanced and best-equipped vehicle we have ever sold, and it is the perfect blend of quiet and clean electric motoring with the range and ease of refueling of a gasoline-powered vehicle.”

The latest third-generation Outlander is larger, wider, more authentic, and more resilient than the model it replaces. With a solid and rigid physique and dazzling 20” two-tone alloy rims, the SUV is embraced by stellar visualization that translates to one of the most stylish SUVs on the market. According to Mitsubishi, the design ethos manifested from the phrase “I-Fu-Do-Do,” which equates to “authentic and majestic” in Japanese. Before this model, I had never considered an Outlander because it did not speak to me or offer any substantial benefits to my lifestyle. Well, now it does with a chiseled body, aggressive “Dynamic Shield” grille, tall robotic headlamps, a power liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, and an impressively curated interior that immediately caught my attention.

Mitsubishi’s Global Warning plan will help establish a sustainable society by reducing the CO2 emissions of its new vehicles by 40% by 2030, with PHEVs as the focal point. The long-term goal is to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050. Thus, this platform is not new to the brand as they first experimented with electrification in 1971 with the MINICA EV and also sold a prior Outlander PHEV in other countries. The current 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features a new generation of the Mitsubishi twin-motor 4WD PHEV system with more power produced from the front (114-horsepower) and rear (134-horsepower) motors that pair with a 20 kWh large capacity 350v lithium-ion drive battery. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC gas engine (132 horsepower) remains and pairs with a larger plastic-sealed gas tank (from 11.9 gallons to 14.8 gallons), reducing the vehicle’s weight and allowing for more fuel. The combined powertrain produces 248-horsepower, 332 lb/ft torque, and 64 MPGe. On the road, the Outlander PHEV is smooth, quick, and never felt underpowered. Additionally, the vehicle will always seek the electric motors as the first power source. Overall, the Outlander PHEV weighs 440 pounds more than the Outlander ICE (Internal Combustion Engine).

Regarding charging, the port is located on the Outlander PHEV’s rear passenger side. It will take 6.5 hours to charge the battery using a 240v level-2 charger and 38 minutes through level 3 DC fast charging up to 80%. The SUV features an EV button with four modes: Normal, Charge, Save, and EV mode. Then there is the Innovative Pedal which allows the driver to use one pedal for acceleration and braking for most driving scenarios.

Inside the PHEV I enjoyed the double-pained windows for noise reduction, genuine aluminum trim, multi-view cameras, smartphone wireless charging, window shades, 100v AC power sources, physical knobs on the 9″ touchscreen infotainment system, dynamic navigation graphics, and the impressive 9-speaker Bose premium sound system. However,  Mitsubishi needs to increase the size of the infotainment system since 9″ is small by today’s standards. In the rear, the third row folds out from the floor, but its use is for emergencies or small kids since long hauls would be uncomfortable. The high-quality cabin is spacious, and the softer materials add a flare of elegance. I also relished the massaging feature on the sporty seats.

On the road, the PHEV’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) offers superior gripping and agility capabilities. The dual-motor arrangement uses the rear motor to drive the rear axle and up-front employs the gas engine and motor to drive the front axle. This combo brings extra confidence behind the wheel, especially during high-speed turns which I experienced at a small racetrack in TN. The Outlander PHEV shifts dramatically from right to left with aplomb when an explosive maneuver is required. S-AWC has been upgraded with seven drive modes to tackle adverse weather or venture effortlessly through muddy terrain as I also experienced in a mud pit at the track. S-AWC simultaneously provided excellent handling performance, stability performance, and traction performance. The modes include Normal, Eco, Gravel, Power, Snow, Tarmac, and Mud.

With no federal incentives available, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV costs approximately $8,000 more than the ICE Outlander. Prices fluctuate from $39,845 for an SE model to $49,995 for the 40th Anniversary Edition. Safety abounds with packages like Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Traffic Sign Recognition, Driver Attention Alert, Automatic High Beam, and Hill Descent Control, to name a few. Lastly, Mitsubishi offers a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. Not bad for a vehicle that will be good to you in almost every department.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring: Conscious Automotive Poetry

The origin stories behind the branding of electric car manufacturer Lucid Motors are fascinating. For proper understanding, I had a chance to visit headquarters in Newark, CA to meet with designers, engineers, software developers, and communications executives as they discussed the intimate details of the company’s latest two models, highlighting the first volume production models. And just like Atlanta hip-hop group Outkast’s classic, the products are “so fresh and so clean!”

Two New Lucid Models

Excitement over new possibilities stemmed from drive time in the all-electric, high-performance 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring (GT) and Grand Touring Performance (GTP) sedans and a day of immersion into the Lucid culture. For $154,000, the GT generates 819-horsepower and accelerates to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. The GTP increases output to 1,050 electric horses with a warping speed of 2.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. In this example, luxury car buyers can expect to spend $179,000 before the GTP’s potential $7,500 federal tax credit. These prices do not include the $1,500 destination fee. Yes, these high-end vehicles are slated for wealthy individuals who can afford the finer things, from second and third homes to yachts and opulent vacations.

Battery and Electrification Education

According to Lucid, the Lucid Air Grand Touring leads the EV industry in efficiency with an EPA-estimated range of up to 516 miles or 4.6 miles of driving range per kilowatt hour. The Lucid Electric Drive Unit features two motors (one up front and one in the rear) to create an AWD platform which came into play around the winding roads of the Santa Cruz mountains. The vehicle is balanced, and weight transfers are fluid for optimal performance. At higher speeds, the GT and GTP are stiff and compliant; while cruising, the vehicle is pure and seductive. Track-proven battery technology stems from Formula E experience where Lucid has provided the battery packs since 2018.

Initially partnering with Electrify America, the in-house engineered Lucid Air Battery Pack is compatible with any public charging station. It can deliver up to 300 miles of charge in approximately 21 minutes from the high-capacity 112 kWh (118 kWh GTP), 900v battery at a 350 kWh DC fast charger. Higher kWhs translate to a more extended driving range. The unit also features bi-directional capabilities to power your house if there is an outage. It converts the vehicle’s DC electricity (direct current) back to AC electricity (alternating current) through its onboard bi-directional charger. Also expect a 10-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty.

Launch Control

The Lucids power up when you unlock the doors and feature three drive mode settings: Smooth, Swift, and Sprint. Steering, torque, regeneration settings, and damping are all influenced by the mode of choice selected. Launch Control (LC) is my favorite performance feature, engaged out of Sprint mode. At PayPal Park we demonstrated LC which excited me emotionally as the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance squatted into the suspension and blasted off upon full acceleration. There is nothing like the instantaneous acceleration of electric torque. Eric Bach, Lucid Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer, also iterated how tire development is customized with brands like Michelin and Pirelli for the precise specs required.

One-pedal Driving

With two settings, one-pedal driving simulates braking when you release the throttle, but you can’t turn it off completely. I’m not a fan and had Lucid tame it down so I could manipulate the braking myself.

Special Edition Dream Edition

Before my Northern Cali visit, I had the pleasure of a spirited test drive around Fairfax County, Virginia in a special edition Eureka Gold Lucid Air Dream Edition. Sorry, Lucid sold all 520 units of the $169,900 limited production vehicle to forward thinkers who will be liberated by its 2.42 second 0 to 60 mph time. The vehicle’s design is emotionally appealing and its performance is magnificent. Depending on packaging, the maximum output is an astonishing 1,111-horsepower and 520 miles of range with 19″ wheels. Lucid was going for efficiency during the product planning process, but performance became the byproduct. In addition to the Dream Edition, GT, and GTP, the Lucid lineup includes the $87,400 Pure and the $107,400 Touring, which have begun production with availability in quarter four.

EV Software Development

Though the EV space comprises less than 3% of the US automotive market in totality, the goal is to continue developing battery-powered machines to reduce the carbon footprints that humans generate from their inventions. We must explore alternative fuel sources for a better, brighter, and cleaner future. Of course, helping to spearhead that charge is EV startup Lucid Motors, with a 500-acre manufacturing plant in Arizona. The company also develops the majority of its core technologies and software in-house. Derrick Carty, VP of Software Platform, explained that the audio system, Android-based operating system, and navigation are designed and implemented directly by Lucid. With 50 plus computers in the vehicle and five unique operating systems, updates can be executed over-the-air including the active suspension and acoustic settings. Lucid is off to a great start, but the features need to be enhanced to reflect the price point of the vehicles. I found the audio to be a bit weak and had some frustrations with the navigation. Lucid says the best listening experience is with Adobe recorded music such as Tidal.

Exterior Design

Stylistically, the Air is as unique and titillating as they come. Derek Jenkins, Lucid Senior VP of Design and Brand, stated how they looked at aircraft designs for inspiration. With 100% aluminum architecture, the Grand Touring is long and sits extremely low for better aerodynamics. An all-glass canopy (roof) extends from the windshield in an interesting one-piece glass and roof combo that is outlined by aluminum trim to create a two-tone effect no matter if you select a Quantum Grey, Cosmos Silver, Infinite Black, Stellar White, or Zenith Red hue. However, remember that glass attracts heat, especially in regions like Florida. A large cavity under the front hood provides 280 liters of storage. Easy entry into the vehicle stem from 90-degree door openings and a choice of three 21-inch, one 20-inch, and one 19-inch rim design provides character. Lucid also placed 14 cameras and 32 sensors around the Airs. In the rear, the largest single-piece taillamp in the industry flows with the clamshell opening trunk.

Interior Design

A 34” main screen and 12.3” center stack touch display operates everything from the steering wheel and mirror adjustments to the 21-speaker “Surreal Sound” audio system, massage, and climate settings. At the same time, open-pore wood accentuates the two-tone cabin. Inside is very spacious with headroom for taller individuals and no visible blind spots.

The lifestyle space features a lounge, display vehicles, visual content, and a 4K Virtual Reality Experience Configurator for customers to personalize their sedan from exterior hues to interior material selections, all inspired by and named after specific cities in California such as Santa Monica, Santa Cruz, and Tahoe. For maintenance, Lucid will place a service center in the vicinity of every retailer. Some of these locations will also perform bodywork. The EV maker will also provide mobile service to go along with the over-the-air software updates. Lastly, there is the option of Lucid staff picking up your vehicle for service.

EV Conclusion

It was a pure moment of reflection into the future of mobility as the emergence of electrification conversations continues to take precedence in an era of global warming and planetary resource depletion. Every major automaker plans to launch an EV within the next ten years, from Audi to Bentley (if they haven’t already). In the mix is Lucid, who is primed for the bevy of conscious consumers looking for evolutionary change.

Philly Lifestyle Tour with Actress Nafessa Williams and the 2022 Lexus NX

It was an energetic weekend in “The City of Brotherly Love” with Nafessa Williams as the “Black Lightning” actress gave Automotive Rhythms a glimpse into her world of film, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship while rolling around town in a Grecian Water 2022 Lexus NX 350 Luxury AWD. You’ll also see the Philly native starring in the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

To integrate the luxury brand with urban lifestyles and culture, Lexus has utilized the NX over the past year as a platform for Black entertainers, pro athletes, social influencers, and thought leaders to express themselves to their audiences in another light. For example, from a philanthropic perspective, Nafessa is a stern believer in uplifting the community that uplifted her. The jubilation we witnessed while she spoke and practiced with the cheer squad teens was priceless, yet fulfilling since our youth need increased inspiration from those that have previously walked in their shoes.

“Yes, it felt good cruising through my childhood neighborhood in the NX to visit the Northwest Raiders, who I sponsor and previously cheered for,” stated Williams. “Wow, returning brought back that competitive energy of wanting to be the best team in the city. I got that from growing up right here in Philly!”

As I always say, “lead by example so your child becomes the example.” Correspondingly, safety is a crucial tenet for mentoring younger girls. As a big sister and protector, Nafessa is a fan of Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0), which adds confidence and assurance to her drive. The advanced LSS+ 3.0 includes a new E-Latch and Safe Exit Assist that uses blind-spot monitors to prevent occupants from opening a door if the Lexus detects another vehicle approaching too close.

When she’s in her entertainment element, the actress and entrepreneur exhibits pinpoint focus to accomplish her multitude of studio responsibilities. For example, Nafessa just finished filming the role of Robyn Crawford in “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” directed by Kasi Lemmons. Additionally, she recently wrapped Lee Daniels’ FX pilot, “The Spook Who Sat by the Door,” opposite Y’lan Noel and Nathan Darrow. The Philly native worked meticulously from the ground up to manifest her dreams. On the feature side, she can be seen in the Deon Taylor’s “Black and Blue,” starring Naomie Harris, Frank Grillo, and Tyrese Gibson. Lastly, Nafessa plays in the Sundance hit “Burning Sands,” which streams on Netflix. For entertainment outside of the big screen, she revels in newfangled automotive technology with a 14″ touchscreen and Lexus Interface. It uses cloud-based connectivity and a “Hey Lexus” voice assistant to satisfy driver requests. Connecting her phone is seamless using Wireless Apple CarPlay to take calls or chill out to the symphony of her favorite artists through the 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system. More importantly, wireless phone charging is a must.

To enjoy the day after touring Nafessa’s neighborhood, we set course to a few iconic Philadelphia locations such as Boat House Row, the Philly Museum of Art and Rocky Stairs, the Ben Franklin Bridge, and the popular LOVE Sculpture at John F. Kennedy Plaza where locals and tourists alike visit incessantly for selfies and photos with friends and family. While cruising, she took note of her driver-inspired cockpit, designed with the philosophy of perfect balance where key features are placed within reach and right where you need them.

When prepping for scenes, Nafessa is all about fashion and beauty care whether it’s with hair styling, her wardrobe, or the appeal of the NX which is blessed with an attention-grabbing spindle grille, LED headlights, LED “blade” taillamps, and sporty styling including 20” 20-spoke alloy rims. Expect an MSRP of $49,000 for the 2022 NX-350 Luxury AWD model, and make sure to tap into the Digital Key. It lets the driver use their phone as a key without having the fob present.

2022 Audi RS e-tron GT in Tango Red Metallic: The Quiet Storm

Long, low, and wide, a storm is on the way. It won’t make a sound, but you’ll immediately feel the wrath of the 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT when you hit it. Performance resonates from 590-horsepower (637 in Boost Mode), 612 lb-ft of torque, quattro AWD, and an adaptive air suspension. A carbon fiber roof, mirrors, rear diffuser, and front air inlets add to the magnetism of our Tango Red Metallic high-performance electric Gran Turismo.

Zero Emissions Admissions

Of course, the world is facing a global warming crisis requiring the reduction of humankind’s carbon footprint. From what we eat, such as animal factory farming, to how we travel negatively impacts the air we breathe and Mother Earth’s reactions to the deteriorating lifestyle habits. With that, every major automaker has shifted to the production of electric vehicles (EVs). Some brands are already 100% EV companies like Rivian, Tesla, and Lucid. Audi’s theme is dubbed the “Future is Electric” and plans on converting 30% of its fleet to full EVs or plug-in hybrids by 2025. By 2050 the entire company should be net CO2 neutral based on executive proclamations.

Audi e-tron Ecosystem

I’ve had the pleasure of test-driving Audi’s entire e-tron fleet and am pretty impressed. The 2022 RS e-tron GT and e-tron GT are the big boys of the family and provide supercar performance attributes in the form of an EV. My Tango Red Metallic RS handled corners with aplomb at high speeds, stopped on a dime, and accelerated like cheetahs in Masai Mara while emulating the digital sound effects of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. Audi drive select will keep the battery in check since the electric driving range is an EPA-estimated 232 miles for the RS. But the odometer stated 265 miles on my ride. In Efficiency mode, the vehicle will stretch out your mileage; in Dynamic mode, the RS blasts off whenever you tap the throttle. But every time you do so, conscious thinking about where and when to recharge takes precedence. The good news is that Audi will provide three years of complimentary DC fast charging through Electrify America and its 800 charging stations (3,500 individual chargers) throughout the country. In addition, Audi Care for EVs will handle service for $999 over three years. Moreover, Audi will assist owners in setting up an Electrify America Level 2 AC charger in their home.

Styling Amenities & the Year One Package

To differentiate your e-tron GT from the next, Audi decorates the sports car in nine hues and curates six interior Dinamica/Leatherette or Fine Nappa leather options. Standard 20” alloy rims pair with the GT unless you upgrade to one of the performance packages. Specifically, the RS e-tron GT is blessed with a lightweight, high-strength, carbon fiber roof and the technological Matrix-design headlights with Audi laser light are available as an intelligent upgrade.

This model I test drove for a week topped at $161,890, including the $20,350 Year One Package. At first, it may sound expensive, but your vehicle will be enhanced with over ten critical, performance-oriented and alluring features. Year One includes 21” 5-twin spoke-concave rims wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 265/35 R21 summer tires, Audi laser lights, Blacked-out logo and emblems, ceramic brakes with massive red calipers, carbon-fiber trim, carbon-fiber side sills, Fine Nappa Leather performance seats with honeycomb stitching and a massaging feature, and rear wheel steering. You also receive the enticing RS interior design package with a black cockpit, red seatbelts, and red contrasting.

Electrified Performance Attributes

The RS e-tron GT is potent in every respect. Raw energy is produced through a 93 kWh battery with active liquid cooling, dual synchronous electric motors with adjustable regenerative braking, a single-speed front transmission, and a two-speed rear transmission. Top track speed is 155 mph, and electric quattro drive with torque vectoring increases handling capabilities. The Alcantara-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel made me feel like Lewis Hamilton every time I jumped in the cockpit. It’s challenging driving without flooring it at every light. To repower your EV, Audi says 10 minutes of DC charging will restore 120 miles and 22 minutes roughly 180 miles. Keep in mind that these times are predicated on using a 270 kWh or higher charger.

EV Charging Infrastructure

There are three levels of charging: Level 1 (your home outlet), Level 2 (240v in-home installation or public), and Level 3, aka DC Fast Charging which are mostly installed at public retail locations. Level 1 is the slowest and gives you 3 to 5 miles per hour. Level 2 is the most convenient since it will majorly take place at home overnight and energizes your ride 15 to 30 miles an hour. DC is the way to go when you are traveling with a low battery. I utilized EVgo (only found 50 kWh chargers) since I could not find an Electrify America in my vicinity. Fast chargers are available from 25 kWh to 350 kW for passenger EVs. Electrify America builds 150 kWh and 350 kWh chargers and would be the network of choice if they were close to my home. Yet, Tesla has the most stable and efficient charging ecosystem and partly why they sell so many EVs.

My weeklong reservation with the e-tron was purifying, unique, and fulfilling. Though the experience came with a few hiccups due to the charging network, I am confident that expansion is on the way. HBCU Students from North Carolina A&T to Participate in Multimedia Internship with Audi of America and the Black Automotive Media Group

Now in its second year, the Black Automotive Media Group internship program, dubbed “The Driving Force,” exposes students to career opportunities in the automobile industry, including automobile manufacturers, automobile multimedia, and other automobile industry suppliers and businesses.

A unique partnership has been created for students interested in exploring myriad career opportunities within the automobile industry. Through the Black Automotive Media Group (BAMG), students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participate in The Driving Force (TDF), a 10-week, virtual, field-credit internship comprising training and mentoring sessions. While this course is supported by automobile manufacturers seeking diverse talent pipelines for future employment within their companies, participating students also learn about auto industry career opportunities at the multimedia, sales, marketing, and supplier levels.

For the Spring, 2022 academic semester, TDF welcomes students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. More importantly, this internship would not be possible without the forward thinking and support of Audi of America, based in Herndon, Virginia.

“Our collaboration with North Carolina A&T State University and Audi marks the 6th academic curriculum with HBCUs that allows us to extend new opportunities to minority students,” said BAMG founding member Kimatni D. Rawlins. “The Driving Force will continue to help shape career pathways for talented interns while offering more perspective on the automotive industry’s various fields.”

TDF evolved following a series of discussions between automakers and BAMG members in 2020. While those conversations began with an effort to improve the diversity and inclusion of African American journalists covering the industry, the opportunity presented itself to help prepare the next generation of automobile industry professionals.

“Audi of America is proud to partner with the Black Automotive Media Group in support of these incredible students at North Carolina A&T University,” said Tara Rush, Audi of America chief marketing officer. “We believe our commitment to an inclusive and equitable workplace means not only increasing awareness for career opportunities within the automotive industry, but also building additional pathways for diverse student talent to gain experience in the industry through programs like this.”

The program is led by respected automotive media experts Kimatni D. Rawlins of Automotive Rhythms Communications, publisher Teia B. Collier, and media guru Marcus Amick.

A Preview of the 2022 Range Rover: New Levels of Emotional Engagement

The opulent and mechanically-savvy Range Rover (RR) is the consummate SUV for connoisseurs of the finer things in life, from travel to housing to automotive. Over the past 50 years, Land Rover has asserted its dominance in the US marketplace while appeasing the minds and souls of its loyal consumer base. Spend a few moments in the neighborhood of Hollywood Hills, for example, and you will see the omnipresent vehicle dominate every block. A Range Rover is not just a means of driving pleasure, but a representation and symbolism of your achievements which should always be celebrated.

To introduce the 2022 Range Rover luxury SUV, Land Rover held an exclusive gathering at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Hollywood, CA where executives, including Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern, presented the 5th generation model to the media, enthusiasts, and lifestyle influencers. Fans will be happy to hear about the addition of a three-row, 7-passenger variant as well as the opulent SV Serenity LWB (Long Wheelbase) edition that feels Queen and Kingly when seated in the rear. In 2024, a pure-electric Range Rover will add to the current 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged stalwart V8 engine distributing 523-horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. Dynamic Launch provides a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.

“The New Range Rover is a vehicle with a peerless character, from the impeccable restraint of its exterior to the flawless tranquil sanctuary of its cabin,” stated Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover. “Informed by creative intellect and a desire for perfection, it doesn’t follow fashion or trend, but by a modernist design philosophy, combined with over 50 years of evolution, it is quite simply the most desirable Range Rover ever created.”

The 5th generation Range Rover is ripe with refinement and presents sophisticated engineering innovation and aspirational design techniques both externally and inside the exquisite cabin. Moreover, the RR is the best-selling luxury vehicle model over $100,000. However, the British SUV has also been problematic from a quality control standpoint, so hopefully, the reinvention addresses the concerns of prior generations. Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates for the 70 electronic modules could be the solution, but only time will tell. If so, technical supremacy from Land Rover will prove to be worthy at this inflection point of creative significance.

During the business presentation, Land Rover stated that one of the goals is to connect with consumers on a desirable level and delve into their consciousness to understand focal points of decision-making. Do I desire it? Does it do what it is supposed to do? Is it reflective? To ascertain objectives were met, a key differentiator for Land Rover was introduced under the designation “modernism.” This equates to margins free from excess and limitations. The formula provides a clean and reductive design flow. The vehicle now presents flush extremities such as the door handles and a decrease in lines for a cleaner flow. Additionally, its outline is more aerodynamic and resembles an electric vehicle with a futuristic interpretation of the traditional Range Rover.

Other highlights include vertical taillamps hidden in Gloss Black when not in use and light up as Vivid Red LEDs when operational. Digital LED headlights can blank out reflections while focusing on 16 objects simultaneously. Unique hues and two-tone front-to-rear contrasting colorways (SV) will make your vehicle pop and stand out from the crowd. As well, the body architecture is up to 50% stiffer thanks to MLA-Flex technology.

We all know that luxury SUV owners rarely take their precious gems off-road, but it’s a tradition for Land Rover’s fleet, including the New Range Rover. With Terrain Response 2 and six driving modes, the RR can still cruise through water and rise 5.7” over standard ride height through the all-new Electric Air Suspension with Bilstein monotube dampers. Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and standard All-Wheel Steering provide optimum grip and a turning radius comparable to compact vehicles. Lastly, a Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension and eHorizon Navigation data analyze the road ahead and prepare the SUV to respond accordingly.

Open up the Power-Assisted Doors for a warm presentation of intelligence, purity, and relaxing ambiances. Unique materials and premium textiles feature smooth ceramics like the gear shifter, intricate mosaic marquetry, lustrous plated metals, soft near-aniline leather, as well as sustainable non-leather Ultrafabrics and Kvadra wool-blend. A new 13.1″ curved, floating touchscreen with haptic feedback and Pivi Pro Infotainment take center stage with 90% of all functions just two touches away. Previously, it was utter confusion trying to navigate through the menus. Additional conveniences come in the form of a built-in Amazon Alexa system with instinctual verbal commands for music, navigation, smart home devices, etc., 1,600-watt Meridian Signature Sound System, Next-generation Active Noise Cancellation technology, intuitive climate control, lit multifunctional steering wheel controls, 11.4” rear touchscreens, 14 power and data points for connection, and WiFi hotspot for eight devices.

With the wheelbase increased by 3” legroom also has been improved. Land Rover added tailgate seating for the rear, but the setup is pretty disappointing since it’s nothing more than simple pads. In addition to the standard wheelbase, the RR comes in three LWB seating configurations, including the normal 5-seat variation, a 4-seat SV Signature Suite configuration, and the three-row 7-seater, which will compete with the Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. But I find the proportions too bulky and the model’s disposition entering the scene a bit too late. BMW attempted a three-row SUV with the X7, and it still hasn’t caught on in popularity.

Handcrafted by Special Vehicle Operations, the specifically curated SV Serenity and SV Intrepid design themes amplify an already highly desirable vehicle. Priced from $104,000 in the US, the New Range Rover is available to order now. Expect deliveries to begin in spring 2022.
