2021 Road Test Reviews and What You Need to Learn

Start your new vehicle search with objective expert analysis. Decisive Media Network has been test-driving new vehicles since 1991, and with each year, there are new technologies, performance, and safety features to learn. So much so that it gets harder to determine which models are the best. Therefore, I’ll just give you my take on the 2021 vehicles I have tested this year.

As soon as I think one vehicle is a winner, another one comes along to outmatch it. It’s the nature of the auto industry to outdo itself and the competition. But that’s good news for you because it means more bang for your money.

Determining which new 2021 vehicle to buy depends on your personal preference, budget, and style. Indeed, all the new cars and trucks are more fuel-efficient, safer, and equipped with many advanced features, even the lower-priced economy vehicles.

So, take your time to shop for a new 2021 model to learn about the new features before investing in a new set of wheels. Some of the advanced tech equipped in 2021 vehicles make safety and driving in dense traffic less stressful. Some features to look for includes:

Smart- or Adaptive-Cruise Control: Speeds up and slows down while maintaining a safe distance behind cars in front.

Lane-Keeping Assist: Keeps the vehicle in the lane on highway driving.

Lane-Departure Warning: Sounds an alert if the driver is drifting off lane.

Blind-Spot Monitoring: Lets you know when another car is in your blind spot.

Reverse-Brake Assist: Senses if an object is behind the vehicle when backing up and applies the brakes to avoid an accident.

Cross-Traffic Alert: Lets you know when traffic is crossing while backing up.

The new 2021 models tested by Decisive Media Network this year include a week with the 2021 Pacifica Pinnacle minivan, which I fell in love with; the 2021 Land Rover Defender, which has first-class performance and style; the new Corolla SE hybrid is larger and more fuel-efficient; Hyundai Elantra keeps winning awards and outdoing its competition; Lexus ES is sportier and more luxurious; Mazda CX-5 is a great family SUV; Mazda3 is a premium compact with more power and excellent handling, the VW Jetta, is redesigned and reliable; and the Genesis G80 which is out to swash Mercedes and BMW.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle

The new Pinnacle edition is an Ultra-luxury version of the successful Pacifica minivan. It has the versatility and compacity of a minivan but feels more like an SUV. The Pinnacle comes with all the bells and whistles, including Nappa leather seats, second-row captain chair pillows, a vacuum cleaner, Chrysler’s new center console, and it has 13.6 liters of storage capacity.

Models and Pricing: The newly restyled Chrysler Pacifica comes in four trims: Touring FWD ($35,495), Touring L FWD ($38,795), Limited AWD ($48,490), and Pinnacle AWD ($53,770). The top-of-line Pinnacle comes standard with many of the latest tech features, plus a power liftgate, remote start, heated steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, Alexa compatibility, a 3-pane panoramic moonroof, and second and third-row window shades.

Power: All four models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 287 horsepower, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard in the first two, and all-wheel-drive is available and standard in the Limited and Pinnacle models.

Fuel Economy: The Pacifica averages 17 city/25 highway mpg.

2020 Land Rover Defender 110 X

After a 22-year hiatus in the U.S., the Land Rover Defender returns as a two and four-door SUV with advanced off- and on-road capabilities.

Models and Prices:The Land Rover Defender comes in eight trims and 11 configurations. They include the base Defender 90 two-door ($47,450) and four-door 110 ($50,500), Dynamic S two-door 4×4 90 ($57,800), First Edition ($64,100), and the top-of-line X model two-door ($80,500) and four-door for $83,000 MSRP.

Power: The base model Defender comes with a 2.0-liter Inline four-cylinder engine that gets 296 horsepower or an upgraded turbocharged Inline-6 that generates 395 horsepower. Both powerplants are quick on the feet and assisted by an eight-speed auto w /OD and auto-manual. The turbo-6 has a 48-volt mild-hybrid, a twin-scroll turbocharger, an electric supercharger, and a starter motor that can assist the gas engine and provide regenerative braking.

Fuel Economy: The two-door gets 19 combined mpg/17 city/22 highway, while the four-door averages 18 mpg.

2021 Corolla LE Hybrid

Toyota introduced the Corolla Hybrid as an all-new sedan for the 2020 model year. An automatic engine shut-off was added to all 2021 Corollas. This system automatically shuts off your engine if your Corolla is left running.

Models and Pricing:The factory MSRP for a 2020 Corolla LE is $20,050, while 2021 is $20,275. The 2021 Corolla Hybrid comes in one trim level and starts at $23,600 (MSRP), with a destination charge of $995.

Power: Toyota’s compact hybrid sedan uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine, paired with two electric motors, which together get 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. It has just enough horsepower and torque to dodge in and out of city traffic.

Fuel Economy: The EPA rates the 2021 Corolla Hybrid at 52 city/53 highway, with a combined 52 mpg.

2021 Hyundai Elantra

As the winner of the 2021 North American Car of the Year award, the new Hyundai Elantra impressed most of the 50 judges on the panel as the Best Car introduced for the 2021 model year. In a statement issued, “The all-new 2021 Hyundai Elantra takes top honors for its forward-thinking design and next-level technology.”

Models and Pricing: Redesigned for 2021, the Hyundai Elantra comes in seven trims and 11 configurations – a sedan, a coupe, a hatchback, and a wagon. The 2021 Elantra price starts at $19,650 and ends around $25,450 MSRP, with a destination charge of $1,005.

Power: The base engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 that gets 147 horsepower. The N Line gets a 1.6-liter I-4 that produces 201 horsepower. Transmissions include a two-speed CVT in the base, an automatic 6-speed manual w/OD, or a 7-speed auto-shift manual in the N-line models.

Fuel Economy: The Elantra averages a combined 37 MPG. It drops to 28-31 in the sportier N Line.

2021 Lexus ES 250 AWD

The seventh-generation Lexus ES introduced the four-cylinder 250 to the line-up for 2021, joining the V6 powered ES 350 and ES 300h hybrid models. All-wheel drive is standard on the ES250 model. The ES is comfortable and designed with upscale features and technology, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure mitigation, automatic emergency braking, an eight-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.

Models and Pricing: The Lexus ES comes in four trims and four configurations: Base ($41,798), F Sport ($46,207), Luxury ($47,304) and Ultra Luxury ($46,319),

Power: Powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates 203 horsepower and assisted by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy: The Lexus ES 250 averages a combined 28 mpg

2021 Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 is a premium luxury hatchback that is fun-to-drive and loaded with high-tech driver assistance tech and convenient features. The Mazda 3, redesigned in 2019, added a turbocharged 2.5-liter four and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter for the base model,

Models and Pricing: Base starts at $21,645, the 2.5 S ($22,645), Select ($24,845), Preferred ($25,495), Premium ($27,995), 2.5 Turbo ($31,045), and Premium Plus ($33,595).

Power: The Mazda 3 offers three different engine options: a 2.0-liter that gets 155 horsepower with FWD, a 2.5-liter that gets 186 horsepower, and a 250 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. A six-speed manual is available with the FWD models.

Fuel Economy: The 2.0-liter engine averages 28 city/36 highway mpg. The 2.5-liter gets 26 city/35 highway, while the AWD turbocharged model averages 23 city/31 highway.

2021 Genesis G80

The all-new 2021 Genesis G80 is out to swash its European competitors with its aggressive shape, quality sheet metal, and classy appeal. It drives like it looks and comes at a lower price range than many other vehicles in its class.

Models and Pricing:The 2021 Genesis G80 offers five different trims: 2.5T ($48,745), 2.5T Advanced ($53,325), 2.5T Prestige ($57,625), 3.5T ($60,145), and 3.5T Prestige ($66,125).

Power: The entry-level G80 comes with either a standard turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that generates 300 horsepower or a more powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 375 horsepower. They are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The Genesis G80 doesn’t just look good; it also rides with power, smoothness, and precision.

Fuel Economy: The 2021 G80 averages 23 city/32 highway mpg with the base four-cylinder engine and 19 city/27 highway from the six-cylinder twin-turbo.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta

The newly redesigned fifth-generation Jetta is a reliable and fuel-efficient compact sedan at an affordable price. It has a new front grille, is a bit longer with a broader stance. It is still a little subdued but with more style. Introduced two years ago, the new Jetta is roomier, has upgraded interior quality, and is agile on the road.

Models and Pricing:Volkswagen offers the 2021 Jetta in five trim levels: S ($19,990), R-Line ($23,790), SE ($23,890), SEL ($26,740) and SEL Premium ($29,040).

Power: All models are FWD and powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The S and R-Line come with a six-speed manual, and an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on the SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. For more power, consider the high-performance Jetta GLI or GLI Autobahn with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 228 horsepower.

Fuel Economy: The Jetta gets an estimated 30-city/40-highway mpg.

2021 Mazda CX-5

One of the best SUVs in its class, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is fun-to-drive, agile, and eye-catching. U.S. News calls it “the 2021 Best Cars for the Money”. The CX-5 is also a great family choice because it combines top safety, reliability, convenience, space, and high-tech connectivity.

Models and Pricing: The 2021 CX-5 offers seven trim levels and 12 configurations: Sport FWD/AWD ($25,370-$26,770) , Touring FWD/AWD ($27,110 – $28,510), Carbon Edition FWD/AWD ($28,995-$30,355), Grand Touring FWD/AWD ($30,560-$31,960), Carbon Edition Turbo FWD/Turbo AWD ($30,760-$32,160), Grand touring Reserve AWD ($35,385), and the top-of-line Signature AWD ($37,505).

Power: The Mazda CX-5 Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, and the Grand Touring comes with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that gets 187 horsepower. The CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo, Grand Touring Reserve, and the Signature are powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that gets 227 horsepower.

Fuel Economy: The CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 28 city/26 highway with the 187 HP engine and 25 city/24 highway in the 227 hp engine.

What is the Genesis Motor America Luxury Division?

Not many people know that Genesis is the luxury division of Hyundai Motors and has an affordable line of sedans and SUVs that compete with BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac, and Lincoln. But that’s about to change with the Genesis GV70 crossover’s launch and the all-new 2021 GV80 SUV. Now that Genesis has over 300 stand-alone dealerships to provide first-class customer service, consumers will also begin to notice their presence.

Despite low recognition, the brand was ranked #1 in the Consumer Reports Annual Ranking of Automotive Brands, won the Top New Vehicle Satisfaction award by AutoPacific, the 2019 Motor Trend Car of the Year, and the 2019 North American Car of the Year, in addition to many other accolades.

The masterminds behind the brand come from a talented team of engineers and designers recruited from other automakers like Bentley, BMW, and Audi. Genesis vehicles are thousands of dollars less than many rivals in its class, offering excellent value and aggressive style. It also comes loaded with more standard safety features and conveniences.

The original Genesis and Equus models were sold under Hyundai before Genesis Motors spun off as a separate luxury division. In 2017, the Genesis G90 replaced the Equus, followed by the G80, G70 sedans, and the GV70 crossover.

Today, there are now five models under the Genesis brand: the G70 sedan, the mid-size G80, the full-size G90, and the GV70 Crossover. The recently launched all-new 2021 GV80 SUV hopes to drive awareness of the brand and more consumers to Genesis dealerships.

The GV80 is the first Genesis built on an SUV platform, with a standard rear-wheel-drive, optional all-wheel-drive, and an optional third row to accommodate seven passengers.

I recently tested the top-of-line 2020 Genesis G90 and was impressed with the style, comfort, and power from its 5.0-liter Ultimate V8 that generates 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet torque. The base model G90 3.3T Premium is powered by a Twin Turbo premium V6 that gets 365 horsepower with 376 lb-ft of torque.

Genesis now has a complete line of sedans and SUVs to begin competing with comparable luxury-class competitors. The flagship G90 starts around $72,200 MSRP for the base model V6 and goes up to $78,200 for the V8 model. All vehicles come loaded with standard safety and performance technology, and an eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels. The all-wheel-drive system is available as an option.

The G90 5.0 Ultimate is the best option for accommodating five passengers. The backseats provide executive style features with lots of rear legroom, dual entertainment screens, power-adjustable and ventilated seats.

The Genesis G80 sedan also received a significant overhaul this year. Since there were no substantial changes to the 2020 G90 this year, it is an excellent deal as a new or certified-used purchase.

2020 Lexus NX 300h Reviews, Price and Features

I started writing about new automobiles in 1992 when the World Wide Web was in its infancy stage. The Internet and cars of today were unimaginable back then. I suppose Henry Ford could not have envisioned today’s modern vehicles either.

Those were my thoughts when I had the opportunity to test drive the 2020 Lexus NX 300h. Magnificently designed and engineered, it’s one of the hottest-selling compact luxury crossover SUVs in the segment, loaded with the latest electronic and safety technology.

Lexus entered the small crossover SUV market in 2015 with the NX model, which is now the hottest segment in the U.S. Lexus is not alone; today, almost every luxury brand now has a compact five-seat crossover SUV. These smaller SUVs bring the luxury class within reach of more buyers, who prefer them over sedans. They offer more versatility, plusher interiors, advanced safety technologies, and standard or available all-wheel drive.

Today, one of every four vehicles sold in the U.S. is a compact crossover SUV, which makes up 24.2% of the total U.S. car market. The luxury compact crossover sales represent 13.3% of the compact crossover market.

The Lexus NX 300h, positioned between the mid-size RX and the subcompact UX, is the luxury hybrid class leader. Starting at $39,420 MSRP, it gets 33 mpg city and 30 highway. Other lineup models include the base NX 300 AWD starting around $38,270 and averaging 22 city/28 highway; The NX 300 F Sport AWD begins at $40,510 and averages 22 city/27 highway. The front-wheel-drive F Sport is about $1,000 less.

Standard equipment includes the Lexus Remote Touch controller, an 8-inch display, WiFi hotspot, remote start, leather upholstery/steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, a USB port, an eight-speaker stereo, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Lexus NX also comes with the Lexus Safety System 2.0+ suite. It includes a pre-collision warning and braking system, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-trace assist, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and road sign recognition.

Driving is perky and smooth, and it performs like a Lexus sedan in congested city traffic and freeways. The standard all-wheel-drive feels confident in all conditions, especially on wet surfaces and handling sharp highway ramps.

The 300h gets its energy from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas and three electric engines which generate 194 horsepowers. The base NX 300 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 235 horsepower. Both models come with a six-speed continuously variable automatic transmission.

The 2020 Lexus NX 300h is a great compact hybrid crossover for performance, fuel economy, and safety in congested traffic. However, if you want more back seat and cargo space, consider the larger RX hybrid model. For buyers who wish to have more fuel economy and less space, consider the smaller Lexus UX Hybrid.

Why “Driving Matters” in Mazda’s 2020 Midsize CX-9 SUV

The brains behind Mazda’s 2020 CX-9 is the SKYACTIV, a suite of technologies that improves handling, fuel efficiency, and performance. The tagline for the Mazda CX-9 is “Driving Matters,” to convey its comfort and roominess for moving large families around town in style, as a midsized SUV with three-rows and six to seven seats.

The largest vehicle in Mazda’s fleet, the 2020 CX-9, covers a full range of features and prices in the midsize SUV class. It starts with the base sports model from $33,890 MSRP, which competes with the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander; up to the near-luxury Signature CX-9 that starts around $46,215 and approaches the ride and feel of a premium luxury SUV.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 is available in four trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. They are all powered by Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 227 horsepower and 310 bl-ft of torque on regular fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft with premium gas. All models come with a six-speed automatic transmission that comes in either front- or four-wheel drive (AWD), except for the Signature, which only comes in AWD. The FWD version is about $2,000 less than AWD.

Mazda’s engine technology is called SKYACTIV-G and gets better fuel efficiency and more power out of the traditional aspirated gasoline combustion engine. The technology works by compressing the air-fuel mixture through the cylinders, which uses less fuel to generate more energy.

The turbo response from Mazda’s four-cylinder engine in the CX-9 Signature was quick and smooth, compared to many of its six-cylinder rivals in the midsize SUV class. Fuel savings also makes the CX-9 more competitive. The four-cylinder engine is robust and averages 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The top-of-line 2020 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD with the SKYACTIV-Drive handled superbly in the sports mode on the streets and highway. It includes the six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission that also improves the fuel economy and the torque transmission by combining the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), dual-clutch automated manual transmission, and standard automatic transmission.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-Drive system is continuously monitoring the road conditions, weather, acceleration, and steering to determine when to send power to the front or rear wheels or to engage AWD when more traction is needed. The AWD system also has an Off-Road mode.

Another component of SKYACTIV is Vehicle Dynamics. This integrated system monitors the behavior of the driver and road conditions to improve handling by applying the brakes and torque to the wheels when needed. It continuously monitors the engine, transmission, body, and chassis to provide more stability and response.

Luxury materials and equipment emanate inside the cabin. It has real Santos Rosewood inlays throughout the interior, high-quality Nappa leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain seats, a rear power liftgate, and an upgraded infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen display.

The exterior of the CX-9 Signature stands out, as well, against the other models with distinctive badging, more LED lights, and accent lighting on the grille. Rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic high beams are now standard on all 2020 Mazda CX-9 models.

Introduced in 2020, the GLB-class has available third-row and seven-seats, which gives Mercedes eight SUV categories, starting at $36,230 for the smallest GLA class and up to $130,900 for the top-of-line G-Class SUV.

The advanced Mercedes transmission includes a choice of automatic or paddle-shifting with four drive modes that include Eco/Comfort for daily driving, Sport for power and performance, Off-Road, and Dynamic Select that adapts the steering, suspension, and drivetrain to suit your preference.

The GLB250 is ideal in dense urban streets and congested freeway traffic. The twin-scroll turbo makes it quick on its feet and highly responsive when passing, taking on sharp curves, or changing lanes.

Interior conveniences include ergonomic front seats in various upholstery options, dash and door trim in natural wood grain, and aluminum accents. The GLB offers the Mercedes available LED ambient lighting in 64-colors and hues to change the vehicle’s atmosphere to soothe your mood.

The GLB also comes with Mercedes dual 7-inch or 10-25-inch high-resolution displays that allow customization of the instruments and multimedia to match your preferences.

Say “Hey, Mercedes,” and the GLB can hear your commands and change the climate, navigation, and other cabin features. Other high-tech features include a mobile application that will lock/unlock doors, check vehicle status, or schedule service. WiFi is available with a monthly subscription.

The GLB also has many smart safety and driver assistance features found in higher priced luxury vehicles. It can change lanes by tapping the turn signal, hands-free parking, and the adaptive cruise control to steer and maintain a safe distance behind upfront traffic. The fall season marks the end of the year for 2020 vehicles, the time period when the new 2021 model year vehicles start going on sale. Because dealerships are eager to offer big discounts to make room in their showrooms for the new vehicles, this is the best time to strike a good deal on the 2020 models.

This year, the COVID-19 health crisis has made car buying more convenient and less expensive. Initially, many believed the automotive industry would finally go bankrupt when new vehicle sales took a nosedive after shelter-in-place and stay-at-home declarations shuttered dealerships and forced manufacturing plants to close.

The 2020 Outback is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 182 horsepower and a forced induction 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that gets 260 horsepower. Both powerplants are paired with a variable automatic transmission.

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on the base 2020 Outback starts at $27,655, including the destination charge of $1,010. The Premium model goes for $29,905, the Limited trim costs $34,455, and the Touring runs for $38,355 MSRP.

The 2020 Audi Q3

Some of the most popular selling SUVs like the 2020 Audi Q3 may not offer major incentives, but by going through one of the car buying services, you can still get one for thousands of dollars below the MSRP.

Redesigned last year, the 2020 Audi Q3 is a compact luxury SUV that looks and feels charming. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 228 horsepower. The Q3 is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that executes seamlessly and is quick on adapting to changing road conditions.

The standard all-wheel drive system on the Q3 is responsive, firm, and comfortable. Advanced safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The 2020 Lincoln Aviator

One of the sharpest looking luxury SUVs on the streets, the new 2020 Lincoln Aviator, should be on your shopping list if you’re in the market for a premium midsize SUV. The Aviator combines style, technology, and luxury with a powerful performance.

The Aviator has three rows, which makes it roomy enough to carry up to seven passengers on long road trips. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine provides plenty of power, while a 10-speed automatic transmission produces a sporty and smooth ride on highway and city roads.

The new Lincoln Aviator is loaded with advanced technology and safety features, including a 360-degree camera, various drive modes, lane keeping assist, pre-collision assist, blind-spot detection, and more. The base model starts at $51,100 and tops out at $87,800 MSRP.

The 2020 Mazda6

The 2020 Mazda6, which was redesigned in 2014, continues to look and fell fresh and new. It received major upgrades each year, and in 2019, it took on new front and rear ends. The Mazda6 is more luxurious than its price suggests.

It offers five different trim levels that include the base Sport and the Touring, which are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 187 horsepower. The Grand Touring and Grand Touring Reserve offer more upscale material and premium features, including a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 250 horsepower.

The Signature is the top-of-the-line model that comes fully loaded with a bigger information display, luxury trim, integrated navigation, and advanced safety technology. Additional features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, sunroof, keyless entry, 11-speaker Bose sound system, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. The Upgraded 2020 Lexus GX460 Luxury

The 2020 Lexus GX460 enters its second generation with some new upgrades to help retain its place in the mid-size luxury SUV class as the leader in residual value and price.

First introduced in 2009, the second generation GX, received several modifications over the years. This time however, the 2020 Lexus GX460 adds an aggressive new exterior front-end, tech, safety, and performance features.

The Lexus GX continues to enjoy a reputation for residual value and reliability. The average resale value of the Lexus GX averages 73 percent of its original cost, which is the highest residual value in its class. Dependability is a huge factor and it may be the reason why Lexus owners tend to hold on to their vehicles longer.

Starting at a base price of $53,000 MSRP, the 2020 Lexus GX460 comes with a long list of standard features, including dual-climate controls, 10-way power seats, wood trim, power moonroof, and tilt/telescope power steering to name a few.

Exterior upgrades include a new spindle front grille that gives it a more aggressive look that distinguishes it from the crowd, triple-beam LED headlamps, a sport design package, a matte black exhaust tip and new taillights.

The 2020 Lexus GX offers three available trim levels, including the base GX460, GX460 Premium, and GX460 Luxury. All models come with a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine that generates 301-horsepower. It is paired with six-speed automatic transmission that can be driven in auto, manual, or utility mode for hauling.

The Lexus Safety System is standard on all models which includes a suite of driver-assist programs like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping alerts.

Although I didn’t have the opportunity to drive it off-road, the GX comes with many of the same on-and off-road suspension capabilities as the Jeep and Range Rover SUVs. The GX460 Luxury offers an off-road package for various terrains, and cameras to see around and under the vehicle. In addition, it has a kinetic dynamic suspension system that adjust the throttle and brakes for better control over different surfaces.

Other off-road abilities include crawl control, adaptive suspension, downhill- and hill-start controls, active traction, and stability controls.

Prices start at $53,000 for the base GX460 and goes up to $64,265 for the GX460 Luxury, which I tested. The price as tested was $64,266 MSRP. The total cost came to $71,240 with options that included $2,020 for the sports package, $1,985 for a dual screen rear-seat entertainment system, $800 for the panoramic view multi-terrain monitors, and a $1,025 destination charge. 2020 Genesis G70 Curves Niche in the Luxury Vehicle Market

The 2020 Genesis G70, which was launched last year by Hyundai’s luxury spin-off Genesis Motors, is proving itself to be a fierce contender in the luxury sports sedan category against rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Cadillac ATS.

It seems that Hyundai was planning to launch its luxury division long before its Genesis Motors subsidiary opened its doors in 2015. The Hyundai Genesis was introduced and was than renamed the Genesis G80 under Genesis Motors, and the Hyundai Equus became the Genesis G90. The Genesis G70 sedan is the new kid on the block and the first all-new vehicle platform launched under the Genesis Motors brand.

The four-door Genesis G70 is a serious competitor in the sports luxury sedan segment. It is also priced lower than its opponents while combining luxury, advanced technology and sporty performance.

Genesis Motors which now has just three sedans in its arsenal, has been gradually craving out a niche in the luxury marketplace at a time when consumers have a stronger appetite for SUVs. Despite that, sales have doubled last year from 10,311 in 2018 to 21,233 in 2019. The G70 accounted for half of those sales. It sold more around 12,000 vehicles.

If things go as planned, the Korean automaker will become a more significant player in the market when it introduces the 2021 Genesis GV80 mid-size luxury SUV this summer.

The 2020 Genesis G70 lineup ranges in price from $35,450 to $46,650 MSRP. The base model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged i4 engine that generates 252-horsepower. It can be paired with a rear- or all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

The 2020 Genesis G70 starts at $36,445 and goes up to $53,245 for a fully loaded 3.3T Sport model with all-wheel drive. I tested the 2020 G70 AWD 3.3T Sport with a twin-turbo 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine that generated a whopping 365-horsepower and 376-lb-ft of torque.

With launch control for better acceleration and dynamic torque vectoring for improved cornering response, the G70 3.0T races from zero to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. The G70 also comes with adaptive dampers that allow for a firmer ride when needed. Overall, the suspension is smooth and powerful, especially when taking on sharp corners and changing lanes.

All Genesis G70 models come with a host of standard safety and technology features, including a 7-inch color display, a 8-inch multimedia screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detention, blind-sport monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and alerts to help you keep your eyes on the road.

The G70 3.3T Sport offers additional features that include 19-inch allow wheels with Brembo brakes, low-beam assist, parking distance warning, ventilated front seas, wireless phone charging, heads-up display, Nappa leather seats with stitching, heated rear seats, electronically controlled suspension, chrome grille, window trim and much more.

Other models include the 2020 Genesis G80 from $42,550 to $60,000 and the G90 from $72,200 to $78,200 MSRP. Prices for the all-new GV80 mid-size luxury SUV will range from $49,925 to $71,795 MSRP when it goes on sale this summer.

The 2020 Range Rover Sport HSE is the athletic version of Land Rover’s Range Rover luxury SUV. In a class of its own, this review explains why the Range Rover SUV invokes the aspiration of those who associate it with luxury and status, as well as, on- and off-road performance.

First introduced in 2005, the 5th generation 2020 Range Rover Sport model which was launched in 2014, now comes with a range of gasoline, diesel, plug-in or mild-hybrid powerplants. They all ride on Land Rover’s four-wheel-drive and eight-speed automatic transmissions platform.

I had the pleasure of test driving the 2020 Range Rover Sport HSE model. However, if you are seriously considering the Range Rover Sport, there are several trims, price ranges, engines, and features to choose from.

The base model comes with a 355-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder that includes a mild-hybrid for faster acceleration and increased fuel economy. A 395-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder and two eight-cylinder engines that generate 518- and 575-horsepower are also available. The plug-in hybrid model generates 398 horses and the average fuel MPG varies depending on the engine type.

The 2020 Range Rover Sport, which has a lighter frame and improved fuel economy, includes several other additions from the previous model year. Some include: a standard mild-hybrid drive-train, a plug-in hybrid, a supercharged eight-cylinder, a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel, optional third-row seating, and the high-performance SVR model. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all vehicles.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, low-speed emergency braking, parking sensors, and lane departure assist and warnings. Other standard and optional performance and safety technology depends on the model.

Price ranges for the 2020 Range Rover Sport starts at $68,650 MSRP for the base SE model and $74,250 for the HSE. The SE and HSE can be upgraded with the optional turbodiesel engine for $750; or the plug-in hybrid for $4,750 MSRP. The plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0-liter 296 turbocharged Si4 gas engine and a high capacity 141 horsepower electric motor to deliver a total of 398-horsepower.

Other models in the Range Rover Sport lineup includes the HST for $82,950 MSRP and the high-performance HSE Dynamic for $86,500 MSRP. It has the same features as the HSE and comes with the 518-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged eight-cylinder engine.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic starts around $88,990 and offers a choice between three diesels, a mild-hybrid or a gasoline engine. The top of-the-line SVR starts at $114,500 and comes with the 575 horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged eight-cylinder engine, electronic air suspension, sporty styling and a list of other luxury features.

New Lexus UX 250 Hybrid F Sport Affordable Subcompact Luxury SUV

Following last year’s introduction of its first subcompact SUV, Lexus added the all-new Lexus UX Hybrid to the model lineup for 2020, to appeal to eco-centered younger customers who want a smaller, more affordable premium luxury SUV with good fuel economy and a high resale value.

The entry level Lexus UX nameplate completes the brands full lineup of SUVs. The UX starts at $32,00 for the base model and goes up to $39,550 for the top-of-line UX 250h Luxury model. Not only does the UX come with many of the luxury conveniences we expect from Lexus, but it is one the most affordable premium subcompact SUVs in the segment.

The all-new 2020 Lexus UX Hybrid is also competitively priced at $34,350 MSRP. As a sibling in the Lexus family, the UX inherited a resale value of 54 percent after 36 months, according to Kelly Blue Book.

The baby Lexus UX models are available in two versions: the front-wheel-drive (FWD) UX 200 is powered by a high-efficiency 2.0‑liter, four-cylinder engine that generates 169 horsepower. It is paired to a 10-speed Direct Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (DCVT).

The UX 250h gets 181 horsepower from a higher-efficiency version of the 2.0‑liter gas engine, and a Lexus engineered fourth-generation hybrid drive system. The power control unit in the Lexus UX is also 10 percent lighter and 20 percent more powerful than the previous Lexus hybrid system.

The Lexus UX Hybrid is built on an all-wheel-drive (AWD) platform and delivers an impressive 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, making it a leader in the hybrid crossover SUV category. The AWD system in the UX 250h uses a separate, dedicated electric motor-generator with 7 horsepower output integrated into the rear differential.

The Lexus UX 250h F Sport Luxury that I drove for a week started at $36,000 MSRP. It included the optional F Sport package for $2,890 and another $2,200 for the 10.3-inch multimedia display with navigation and other features.

Lexus vehicles are known for their quiet and smooth ride and the 2020 Lexus UX 250h F Sport continues that heritage by adding exhilaration, sportiness, and a fun-to-drive experience. It was built with Urban professionals in mind. The idea, according to Lexus, was to “Infuse it with a dynamic attitude…. to make it a unique entry in the luxury compact crossover segment.”

The optional F Sport package offers the ability to enhance the look and performance of all UX models. F Sport includes a sport tuned suspension, and 18-inch, five twin-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. Additional features include a mesh front grille, front bumpers, LED fog lamps, and L-shaped chrome moldings with black trim that give the UX a more aggressive, sportier look.
