Kia Intensifies the Competition with Sorento, K5, and Carnival

Kia Motor Company, South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, is now a force to be reckoned with worldwide, with a full lineup of SUVs, sedans, and a minivan. Once a bland maker of economy vehicles, Kia competes with popular and European cars with advanced technology, designs, fuel economy, and performance.

Despite sharing the same corporate relationship, platforms, and engines with Hyundai Motor Company, Kia has introduced a slew of new models with a unique character that distinguishes them from other brands.

I recently tested three Kia models, including the redesigned 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid SUV, the new 2021 K5 sedan, and the all-new 2022 Carnival minivan. All of them were highly impressive and significantly different than their predecessors.

2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid

The 2021 Sorento Hybrid is Kia’s first electric-backed mid-size crossover. It gets 225 horsepower from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 177.2 horsepower and an electric motor that adds another 60.1 horses.

Kia mated the engine with the electric motor and a 1.5-kWh lithium battery that aids in producing more torque off the line and the ability to coast at highway speeds with the engine off, significantly improving the driving range on a tank of gas.

The Sorento hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission and offers all-wheel drive (AWD).

Model/Price: The base 2021 Kia Sorento S starts around $34,765 MSRP, while the Sorento EX Hybrid front-wheel drive is a six-passenger SUV that starts at $36,590 MSRP.

The top-of-line Sorento X-Line AWD ($42,590 MSRP) comes with multiple luxury features, including 20-inch wheels, leather trim, a 12.3 instrument display, and more. In 2022, the Sorento will offer all-wheel drive in the same price range. Next year, Kia will introduce a plug-in hybrid for about $10,000 more.

Power: A 1.6-liter 16-valve DOHC turbocharged inline four-cylinder produces 177 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and an electric motor produces 60.1 horsepower with 194.7 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy: EPA rated 39 city/35 highway mpg.

2021 Kia K5

The all-new 2021 Kia K5 replaces the Optima, launched ten years ago. The K5 was reengineered to compete with popular mid-size sedans, while the K5 GT performance model goes up against German luxury brands, like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, but at a lower price.

The K5 expects to continue the strong growth that Optima started. However, it faces tough competition from Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Subaru Legacy, and the Volkswagen Passat. In addition, the K5 GT performance model is going after BMW 330i and Audi A4 customers in a more aggressive move.

Models/Pricing: The K5 comes in five trim levels: The 2021 Kia K5 LX ($23,490), the LXS ($24,490 FWD-$26,590 AWD), the sporty GT-Line ($25,390 FWD – $29,090 AWD), EX ($27,990 plus $3,400 for premium package), and the top-of-line K5 GT ($30,490 FWD – $31,890 AWD).

Power: The Kia K5 offers an option between two engines: They include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo producing 180 horsepower at 195 lb-ft of torque or a 2.5-liter inline-four turbo that gets 290 horses at 311 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy: The LX averages 29 city/38 highway mpg; the FWD LXS, GT-Line, and EX average 26 city/34 highway mpg. AWD drops that average a few miles. Upgrading to the 2.5-liter inline-four turbo averages about 24 city/32 highway mpg.

2022 Kia Carnival MPV

The all-new 2022 Kia Carnival, which replaces the Sedona MPV/minivan, radically departs from the usual minivan expectations. Instead, the new Carnival is an MPV/minivan that outdoes many SUVs in features, performance, and innovations. Plus, it looks more like an SUV than a minivan in many respects.

The Carnival is mighty and has a great sense of control on highway and city roads. It shares the same platform as the new K5 sedan, which includes ultra-high-strength steel, making it stronger, quieter, lighter, and stronger than its predecessor. The Carnival seats seven to eight occupants in has class-leading interior room and comes loaded with standard advanced technology and safety features.

Models/Pricing: The 2022 Carnival offers four models that includes the LX ($32,100-$35,275), the EX ($38,775), SX ($42,275), and SX-Prestige ($47,275).

Power: The Kia Carnival tops the segment with a 290 horsepower, 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine.

Fuel Economy: The EPA rating is 19 city/26 highway mpg. Kia plans to introduce a Carnival hybrid in late 2022 and an all-electric model in the following year.

2021 AMG GLE 63 S has Power and Brains

The Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S Coupe joins the high-class SUV category with its aggressive design, super luxury, and a hand-crafted V8 that generates a staggering 603 horsepower. But, starting at a price tag of $116,000 MSRP, is it worth the bucks?

A week-long drive in this super-high SUV convinced me of its superior performance, muscle, and intelligence. Without hesitation, the hand-crafted 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine raced from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The GLE is so powerful and smooth that I had to stay focused on not exceeding speed limits.

There’s no question, the AMG GLE 63 S, was built for the racetrack. Unfortunately, many of its buyers will probably never experience its full potential. However, it is good to know that you have more power and control than most other vehicles on the road. Admittingly, for most people, it’s more of a status symbol than a muscle car.

It is smooth and fast thanks to a mild-hybrid system labeled “EQ Boost.” The 48-volt electric motor replaces a traditional starter and is positioned between the engine and nine-speed transmission to give it an extra 21 horsepower with 184 lb-ft of torque.

The GLE is excellent for cruising along the highway or racing around sharp curves. An active stabilization system prevents roll, and an adaptive damping and air suspension system help increase comfort. Altogether, the combination helps to maintain the balance and command of the road.

The power in the GLE 63 S, managed by advanced computing technology, allows the transmission and steering to adjust to individual driving preferences. They include Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Race, Trail, and Sand.

When driving in the Comfort mode, the vehicle’s traction and stability interact more to control the CUV. However, operating in the Sports or Racing modes give the driver more freedom to let go.

The 2021 Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, loaded with luxury conveniences like Nappa leather with diamond stitching and carbon-fiber trim, is everywhere you touch. The metallic paint job, rectangular exhaust pipes, 22-inch cross-spoke wheels, and large AMG front grille make it easy to spot.

The GLE comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. In addition, there are endless ways to customize the interior and mood, including 64-color ambient lighting that allows multiple customization levels.

Optional features increased the price to $133,830 on the test vehicle. Upgrades included AMG cross-spoke forged wheels, heated massage ventilated front seats, performance steering wheel wrapped in carbon fiber, a head-up display, high-end Burmester surround sound system and a host of active safety features.

Other models in the GLE family includes the Mercedes GLE350 ($54,750), 450 ($62,500), 580 ($70,000), AMG 53 ($70,000), and the AMG GLE 63 S sedan priced around $113,000 MSRP.

2021 Road Test Reviews and What You Need to Learn

Start your new vehicle search with objective expert analysis. Decisive Media Network has been test-driving new vehicles since 1991, and with each year, there are new technologies, performance, and safety features to learn.  So much so that it gets harder to determine which models are the best. Therefore, I’ll just give you my take on the 2021 vehicles I have tested this year.

As soon as I think one vehicle is a winner, another one comes along to outmatch it. It’s the nature of the auto industry to outdo itself and the competition. But that’s good news for you because it means more bang for your money.

Determining which new 2021 vehicle to buy depends on your personal preference, budget, and style. Indeed, all the new cars and trucks are more fuel-efficient, safer, and equipped with many advanced features, even the lower-priced economy vehicles.

So, take your time to shop for a new 2021 model to learn about the new features before investing in a new set of wheels. Some of the advanced tech equipped in 2021 vehicles make safety and driving in dense traffic less stressful. Some features to look for includes:

Smart- or Adaptive-Cruise Control: Speeds up and slows down while maintaining a safe distance behind cars in front.

Lane-Keeping Assist: Keeps the vehicle in the lane on highway driving.

Lane-Departure Warning: Sounds an alert if the driver is drifting off lane.

Blind-Spot Monitoring: Lets you know when another car is in your blind spot.

Reverse-Brake Assist: Senses if an object is behind the vehicle when backing up and applies the brakes to avoid an accident.

Cross-Traffic Alert: Lets you know when traffic is crossing while backing up.

The new 2021 models tested by Decisive Media Network this year include a week with the 2021 Pacifica Pinnacle minivan, which I fell in love with; the 2021 Land Rover Defender, which has first-class performance and style; the new Corolla SE hybrid is larger and more fuel-efficient; Hyundai Elantra keeps winning awards and outdoing its competition; Lexus ES is sportier and more luxurious; Mazda CX-5 is a great family SUV; Mazda3 is a premium compact with more power and excellent handling, the VW Jetta, is redesigned and reliable; and the Genesis G80 which is out to swash Mercedes and BMW.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle

The new Pinnacle edition is an Ultra-luxury version of the successful Pacifica minivan. It has the versatility and compacity of a minivan but feels more like an SUV. The Pinnacle comes with all the bells and whistles, including Nappa leather seats, second-row captain chair pillows, a vacuum cleaner, Chrysler’s new center console, and it has 13.6 liters of storage capacity.

Models and Pricing: The newly restyled Chrysler Pacifica comes in four trims: Touring FWD ($35,495), Touring L FWD ($38,795), Limited AWD ($48,490), and Pinnacle AWD ($53,770). The top-of-line Pinnacle comes standard with many of the latest tech features, plus a power liftgate, remote start, heated steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, Alexa compatibility, a 3-pane panoramic moonroof, and second and third-row window shades.

Power: All four models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 287 horsepower, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard in the first two, and all-wheel-drive is available and standard in the Limited and Pinnacle models.

Fuel Economy: The Pacifica averages 17 city/25 highway mpg.

2020 Land Rover Defender 110 X

After a 22-year hiatus in the U.S., the Land Rover Defender returns as a two and four-door SUV with advanced off- and on-road capabilities.

Models and Prices:The Land Rover Defender comes in eight trims and 11 configurations. They include the base Defender 90 two-door ($47,450) and four-door 110 ($50,500), Dynamic S two-door 4×4 90 ($57,800), First Edition ($64,100), and the top-of-line X model two-door ($80,500) and four-door for $83,000 MSRP.

Power: The base model Defender comes with a 2.0-liter Inline four-cylinder engine that gets 296 horsepower or an upgraded turbocharged Inline-6 that generates 395 horsepower.  Both powerplants are quick on the feet and assisted by an eight-speed auto w /OD and auto-manual. The turbo-6 has a 48-volt mild-hybrid, a twin-scroll turbocharger, an electric supercharger, and a starter motor that can assist the gas engine and provide regenerative braking.

Fuel Economy: The two-door gets 19 combined mpg/17 city/22 highway, while the four-door averages 18 mpg.

2021 Corolla LE Hybrid

Toyota introduced the Corolla Hybrid as an all-new sedan for the 2020 model year. An automatic engine shut-off was added to all 2021 Corollas. This system automatically shuts off your engine if your Corolla is left running.

Models and Pricing:The factory MSRP for a 2020 Corolla LE is $20,050, while 2021 is $20,275. The 2021 Corolla Hybrid comes in one trim level and starts at $23,600 (MSRP), with a destination charge of $995.

Power: Toyota’s compact hybrid sedan uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine, paired with two electric motors, which together get 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. It has just enough horsepower and torque to dodge in and out of city traffic.

Fuel Economy: The EPA rates the 2021 Corolla Hybrid at 52 city/53 highway, with a combined 52 mpg.

2021 Hyundai Elantra 

As the winner of the 2021 North American Car of the Year award, the new Hyundai Elantra impressed most of the 50 judges on the panel as the Best Car introduced for the 2021 model year. In a statement issued, “The all-new 2021 Hyundai Elantra takes top honors for its forward-thinking design and next-level technology.” 

Models and Pricing: Redesigned for 2021, the Hyundai Elantra comes in seven trims and 11 configurations – a sedan, a coupe, a hatchback, and a wagon. The 2021 Elantra price starts at $19,650 and ends around $25,450 MSRP, with a destination charge of $1,005.

Power:  The base engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 that gets 147 horsepower. The N Line gets a 1.6-liter I-4 that produces 201 horsepower. Transmissions include a two-speed CVT in the base, an automatic 6-speed manual w/OD, or a 7-speed auto-shift manual in the N-line models.

Fuel Economy: The Elantra averages a combined 37 MPG. It drops to 28-31 in the sportier N Line.

2021 Lexus ES 250 AWD

The seventh-generation Lexus ES introduced the four-cylinder 250 to the line-up for 2021, joining the V6 powered ES 350 and ES 300h hybrid models. All-wheel drive is standard on the ES250 model. The ES is comfortable and designed with upscale features and technology, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure mitigation, automatic emergency braking, an eight-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.

Models and Pricing: The Lexus ES comes in four trims and four configurations: Base ($41,798), F Sport ($46,207), Luxury ($47,304) and Ultra Luxury ($46,319),

Power: Powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates 203 horsepower and assisted by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy: The Lexus ES 250 averages a combined 28 mpg

2021 Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 is a premium luxury hatchback that is fun-to-drive and loaded with high-tech driver assistance tech and convenient features. The Mazda 3, redesigned in 2019, added a turbocharged 2.5-liter four and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter for the base model,

Models and Pricing: Base starts at $21,645, the 2.5 S ($22,645), Select ($24,845), Preferred ($25,495), Premium ($27,995), 2.5 Turbo ($31,045), and Premium Plus ($33,595).

Power: The Mazda 3 offers three different engine options: a 2.0-liter that gets 155 horsepower with FWD, a 2.5-liter that gets 186 horsepower, and a 250 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. A six-speed manual is available with the FWD models.

Fuel Economy:  The 2.0-liter engine averages 28 city/36 highway mpg. The 2.5-liter gets 26 city/35 highway, while the AWD turbocharged model averages 23 city/31 highway.

2021 Genesis G80

The all-new 2021 Genesis G80 is out to swash its European competitors with its aggressive shape, quality sheet metal, and classy appeal. It drives like it looks and comes at a lower price range than many other vehicles in its class.

Models and Pricing:The 2021 Genesis G80 offers five different trims: 2.5T ($48,745), 2.5T Advanced ($53,325), 2.5T Prestige ($57,625), 3.5T ($60,145), and 3.5T Prestige ($66,125).

Power: The entry-level G80 comes with either a standard turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that generates 300 horsepower or a more powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 375 horsepower. They are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The Genesis G80 doesn’t just look good; it also rides with power, smoothness, and precision.

Fuel Economy: The 2021 G80 averages 23 city/32 highway mpg with the base four-cylinder engine and 19 city/27 highway from the six-cylinder twin-turbo.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta

The newly redesigned fifth-generation Jetta is a reliable and fuel-efficient compact sedan at an affordable price. It has a new front grille, is a bit longer with a broader stance. It is still a little subdued but with more style.  Introduced two years ago, the new Jetta is roomier, has upgraded interior quality, and is agile on the road.

Models and Pricing:Volkswagen offers the 2021 Jetta in five trim levels: S ($19,990), R-Line ($23,790), SE ($23,890), SEL ($26,740) and SEL Premium ($29,040).

Power: All models are FWD and powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The S and R-Line come with a six-speed manual, and an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on the SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. For more power, consider the high-performance Jetta GLI or GLI Autobahn with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 228 horsepower.

Fuel Economy: The Jetta gets an estimated 30-city/40-highway mpg.

2021 Mazda CX-5

One of the best SUVs in its class, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is fun-to-drive, agile, and eye-catching. U.S. News calls it “the 2021 Best Cars for the Money”. The CX-5 is also a great family choice because it combines top safety, reliability, convenience, space, and high-tech connectivity.

Models and Pricing: The 2021 CX-5 offers seven trim levels and 12 configurations: Sport FWD/AWD ($25,370-$26,770) , Touring FWD/AWD ($27,110 – $28,510), Carbon Edition FWD/AWD ($28,995-$30,355), Grand Touring FWD/AWD ($30,560-$31,960), Carbon Edition Turbo FWD/Turbo AWD ($30,760-$32,160), Grand touring Reserve AWD ($35,385), and the top-of-line Signature AWD ($37,505).

Power: The Mazda CX-5 Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, and the Grand Touring comes with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that gets 187 horsepower. The CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo, Grand Touring Reserve, and the Signature are powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that gets 227 horsepower.

Fuel Economy: The CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 28 city/26 highway with the 187 HP engine and 25 city/24 highway in the 227 hp engine.

702 Horses Drive the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX

Named after a Tyrannosaurus Rex, the monster size 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is set in motion by the 702-horse-powered Hellcat engine, making it the most potent high-performance half-ton pickup truck in the world.

Today’s Ram Trucks are part of a global family of vehicles owned by the world’s fourth-largest automaker, Stellantis, recently formed from a merger of Fiat Chrylser and the PSA Group. The new company, headquartered in Amsterdam, owns 14 vehicle brands that include Ram, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romer, Abarth, Lancia, Maserati, Citroen, DS, Opel, Peugeot, and Vauxhall.

Price: The base model 2021 Ram 1500 TRX starts at $71,990 MSRP, while the 702-unit launch edition is priced at $90,315 and goes over $100,000 for a fully loaded TRX. The Launch Edition Level 2 Equipment Group is $7,920 and includes bedside and hood graphics, Beadlock wheels, Harman Kardon speakers, panoramic sunroof, red interior accents, and an array of safety equipment.

Engine: The Ram 1500 TRX, powered by a Hellcat supercharged 6.2-liter eight-cylinder, generates 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The Ram TRX is massive in size and quick on its feet. Although it weighs 6,447 pounds, it can race from zero-to-60-mph in 4.5 seconds and 12.9 seconds at 108 mph in a quarter-mile.

Since the Hellcat-powered vehicle can also be a safety hazard for inexperienced drivers, engineers took precautions and added a safety measure to limit horsepower. The Hellcat includes a valet mode that is with a four-digit PIN. It disables the driving mode, determines the rpm, and maintains stability control.

The Ram 1500 comes with a part-time 4×4 that splits torque between the front and rear axles. Locking differentials in the axles also help direct torque to wheels for more tractions. Full-wheel-drive is optional.

Configurations: The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, based on the 1500 Ram pickup, includes the Launch Edition package and the TRX Level 2 Equipment Group. The TRX is eight inches wider than the regular Ram 1500, with more off-road capabilities and an advanced suspension system.

Once stepping up into the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, you’re surrounded by superior quality luxury materials with all the latest technology, including a vertical 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a hallmark sign of Dodge and Ram trucks. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and navigation. The multimedia display can operate multiple applications simultaneously.

Estimated Fuel: Recommended fuel in the Ram 1500 is either 87 or 89 octane. The EPA estimates for the TRX are ten mpg city and 14 mpg highway.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA35 Transformed

The AMG division at Mercedes-Benz continues to remodel high-performance versions of the brand by introducing the new 2021 Mercedes AMG GLA35 subcompact SUV, outfitted with an enhanced turbocharged four-cylinder 302 horsepower engine and a race-inspired suspension.

The 2021 Mercedes GLA class are small luxury crossover SUVs named GLA250, GLA250 4MATIC, AMG GLA35, and AMG GLA45.  The AMG GLA35 model starts around $47,550 and squarely puts luxury and sporty performance within the masses’ reach. For about $11,000 less, you can get the base model Mercedes GLA 250 without the AMG badge.

Customized by independent engineers and contractors in Affalterbach, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, Mercedes’ AMG division adds another level of luxury and engineering to the GLA Class. The 2021 AMG GLA45, priced around $55,550 MSRP, comes with the powerful 382 horsepower AMG handcrafted engine.

Both GLA models come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Mercedes AMG GLA35 includes an enhanced engine, while the GLA45 comes with an AMG handcrafted engine.

The GLA35 is very smooth, powerful, and fun to drive on the straightaway and during cornering. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive (AWD) system helps maintain a firm grip on the road in any driving mode, including Sports Plus, where the exhaust sound kicks in.

The second-generation GLA35 is a bit shorter, several inches taller, and has more style and performance than the first generation. Buyers get the upgraded version at a reasonable price to attract younger customers to the AMG Class.

Like most Mercedes vehicles, it has a 10.25-inch MBUX touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with high-definition graphics and a user-friendly interface. It can be configured in Classic, Sports, or Supersport modes and controlled by touching or touchpad on the center console.

Mobile connectivity includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB-C ports, and Bluetooth audio streaming. The GLA comes with a trial period of Mercedes Me connect services.

Naturally, the AMG models come with many of the latest safety features, including blind-spot assist, a rearview camera, LED lights, and electronic stability control. The test vehicle came with a digital white metallic paint job and AMG Carbon trim. Options included an AMG performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather, 19-inch AMG 10 spoke wheels, panorama sunroof, heated front seats, and more.

2021 Mazda CX-5 SUV is Looking Good

The first thing you notice about the 2021 Mazda CX-5 crossover is its sculpted exterior design. Redesigned in 2017, it has a shark-looking front end that distinguishes it from other box-shaped competitors in the compact SUV class.

The CX-5 Kodo design is carried over into 2021 with an upgraded multimedia system, more safety features, and a new Carbon Edition model. All CX-5 models receive a larger 10.25-inch display with a three-year trial of the latest Mazda Connect infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Mazda’s i-Activesense safety package is now standard equipment on all models. Features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Mazda also upgraded the front and rear parking sensors with high-definition digital clarity.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 comes in seven trims which range in price from $25,370 to $37,505 MSRP. They include the base Sport starting at $25,370, the Touring for $27,110, the Carbon at $28,995, and the Carbon Edition Turbo is $30,760 MSRP. The Grand Touring goes for $30,560, the Grand Touring Reserve $35,385, and its top-of-line Signature Edition goes for $37,505 MSRP.

The 2021 front-wheel-drive (FWD) CX-5 models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates 186 horsepower. All-2021 Mazda CX-5wheel-drive (AWD) is optional. The Grand Touring Reserve and top-of-line Signature Edition are AWD and powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that gets 227 horsepower.

The new Carbon model offers the choice of luxury features without the turbo-powered engine for a lower price. Carbon Edition buyers can choose either engine.

I tested the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature for this review, which started at $37,505 MSRP. It includes premium Nappa leather seats, real wood trim, dark silver 19-inch alloy wheels, SiriusXM satellite radio with traffic and travel link, navigation, 360-degree surround-view camera, smart braking, drive attention alert, and much more.

All-New 2021 Acura TLX Defines Luxury and Sportiness

The all-new 2021 Acura TLX, re-engineered with new engines, sports performance, and a new generation all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, reinforces Acura’s competitiveness in the premium luxury sports category. Another move by Acura to distinguish its premium luxury performance models in the crowded segment.

The new TLX, based on Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance brand direction, has an aggressive sporty midsize design that is wider, longer, and lower to the ground than the former version. It comes with more powerful engines and an advanced version of the SH-AWD chassis.

The 2021 TLX has a premium sports stance closer to the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera than competitors in the compact class. The new platform, which shares performance technology with the upcoming Acura TLX Type S, includes an ultra-steel body frame, variable-ratio electric power steering, double-wishbone front suspension, a 4thgeneration SH-AWD, and improved weight distribution.

A new generation 2.0-liter VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard on all models. It generates 272 horsepower and replaces the previous 2.4-liter inline-4 and the 3.5-liter V6 engines. The 2021 TLX is more powerful and comes in front-wheel-drive or Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD), which is faster and more responsive.

Interior features include wide-body front seating, a 10.2-inch HD display with touchpad interface with enhanced operations, studio-quality ELS Premium audio with 17 speakers. Customizable ambient lighting in 27 themes to change the environment and mood,

Safety features include new-generation airbags to protect the head in a broader range of collisions. The AcuraWatch safety system includes collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control with low speed, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation, traffic sign recognition, and much more.

The TLX comes in four trim levels: The base TLX starts at $37,500, the TLX with Technology is priced at $41,500, the TLX A-Spec goes up to $44,250, the TLX Advance is $46,300, and the top-of-line TLX SH-AWD Advance, which I test drove starts at $48,300 MSRP. The optional AWD will add another $2,000 to the price tag.

A new 355-hp 3.0-liter turbo-V-6 will power the Acura TLX S-Type, which launches in the Fall. All models come exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The TLX, Acura’s top-selling model, is manufactured in Marysville, Ohio, and assembled with domestic and global parts. The engines are produced in its in Anna Ohio plant and the transmission in Tallapoosa, Georgia.

2021 Toyota Supra is Reborn

The Toyota Supra’s rebirth is more than just a tribute to a high-speed roadster that ended production in 2021. It returns with the brains of two great sports cars in one. The 2021 Toyota Supra combines a twin turbo-charged engine and technology from the BMW Z4 Roadster.

Relaunched in 2020, the Supra is a nostalgic three-door engineered for enthusiasts who love speed and superior road performance. The 2021 models come with more horsepower and a new four-cylinder twin-turbo engine.

Conceived and designed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsports program, the base four-cylinder GR Supra 2.0 starts in the lower forties price range. It generates 255 horsepower and goes from 0-60 in 5.0 seconds.

I tested the 2021 GR Supra 3.0 Premium for this review, which came with a six-cylinder twin-turbo inline powerplant that generates 382 horsepower at 368 lb-ft of torque.

The new Supra, built in partnership with BMW, shares the same inline-six engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and engineering expertise with the BMW Z4. However, Toyota engineers tuned it specifically for the Supra. Additionally, both roadsters share the same chassis.

The Supra reflects characteristics of its former self, but with the latest advanced technology and modern-day conveniences. It is faster and more fun to drive. The eight-speed transmission shifts smoothly, and the paddle shifters provide a sense of manual control. It has a start/stop that turns off in the Sports mode, which also activates a loud exhaust sound.

Safety features include pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic clearance, and adaptive cruise control.

After lowering your head to get inside the cockpit of the two-seater, there’s an 8.8-inch touch screen, wireless smartphone charging, navigation, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and instead of Toyota’s Entune system, the Supra comes with BMW’s iDrive infotainment.

Then 2021 Supra comes in four trims and four configurations: the new 2.0 I-4 starts at $42,990; the 3.0 Coupe gets 382 horsepower from an I-6 engine and goes for $50,990; the 3.0 Premium starts around $54,490; and the top-of-line A91 Edition is $54,795 MSRP.
