The New 2023 Lexus RX 500h Hybrid Ups Performance and Fuel Efficiency

The best-selling Lexus RX midsize SUV, which has broken ground for Lexus since it first hit the scene in 2005, introduces its fifth-generation lineup, an RX 500h hybrid. In addition, it has been completely redesigned for 2023 with an aggressive look, powerful performance, and hybrid technology.

As an automotive enthusiast, I have always been drawn to luxury SUVs that perfectly balance comfort, performance, and safety, and the 2023 Lexus RX 500h is a perfect example of a luxury SUV that checks all these boxes.

The new Lexus RX 500h has a new hybrid system, a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four gasoline engine, and a six-speed automatic transmission rather than the planetary gearset typical of Toyota hybrid powertrains. It makes a total of 367 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. In addition, Lexus says that the all-wheel-drive system, which it calls Direct4, incorporates a more powerful electric motor on the rear axle to improve handling performance.

Models/Price: The RX lineup includes the base RX 350 FWD and AWD (starting at $48,550), the RX 350h hybrid (starting at $50,150), and the powerful RX 500h hybrid (starting at $62,750 MSRP). A plug-in RX 500+ hybrid recently joined the lineup.

Power: Although the 2023 Lexus RX offers four new engines, I experienced the RX 500h F Sport Performance powered by a turbo 2.4-liter inline-four that produces 271 horsepower. It is paired with a high output, low-resistance nickel-metal hydride battery, combining to generate 366 horses and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The new exterior is more muscular than the outgoing model, with sharp lines and contours that give it a modern look. The front grille is bold and striking, with the Lexus logo prominently displayed in the center. The LED headlights and taillights are sleek and contemporary, and the body lines are sharp and well-defined. The 20-inch alloy wheels are stylish and add to the overall sporty look of the SUV.

The interior is spacious and well-appointed, with premium materials and room for five passengers. The seats are comfortable and supportive, with a 10-way power adjustment for the driver and front passenger. The rear seats are also adjustable, allowing passengers to recline and enjoy the ride.

In addition, the 2023 Lexus RX 500h has a 12.3-inch touchscreen display that houses the infotainment system wired to a 12-speaker premium sound system.  Other features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a panoramic view monitor, a head-up display, and a wireless charging pad.,

Safety: The 2023 Lexus RX 500h is packed with advanced safety features that provide peace of mind to drivers and passengers. The SUV comes with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Other safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The SUV also has ten front, side, and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger. The 2023 Lexus RX 500h has received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). 

Fuel Efficiency: The 2023 Lexus RX 500h delivers impressive fuel efficiency, with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. It also has an EV mode that allows it to operate on electric power alone for short distances.

Redesigned 2023 Honda HR-V Crossover Starts Under $30k

The redesigned 2023 HR-V, which is Honda’s most affordable and smallest crossover SUV, is regarded as one of the best subcompact SUVs in the market. The HR-V packs plenty of utility and features into a small package. As a result, it’s ideal for those who want an SUV without a high price tag.

The new 2023 Honda HR-V has a stylish and sporty exterior, including a redesigned front end with a blacked-out grille and sharp LED headlights, giving it a more aggressive look than the previous model. In addition, the Sport trim level comes with larger 18-inch wheels and a sporty body kit, further adding to its sporty appeal.

Overall, the HR-V’s exterior design is significantly improved over the previous model. It offers a greater combination of performance, features, and value, making it an excellent choice for buyers looking for a practical crossover SUV starting under $30K.

However, the 2023 Honda HR-V competes with several other popular crossover SUVs in a crowded market segment. One of its main competitors is the Toyota C-HR, which offers similar features and performance but has a smaller cargo area. The Mazda CX-30 is another popular choice, offering excellent handling and a luxurious interior, but it comes at a higher price than the HR-V.

For a subcompact SUV, the cargo area is spacious, with 24.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and up to 58.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. This makes the HR-V a practical choice for those who need to haul large items or go on road trips.

Power: One of the most significant changes is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine shared with the Civic. Although it only generates 158 horsepower, it quickly accelerates from zero to 60 mph in around eight seconds. It is just right in dense urban traffic.  It is paired with a smooth and responsive continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and has front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive as an available option.

Models/Price: The 2023 Honda HR-V comes in three different trim levels: LX ($25,096), Sport ($27,195), and EX-L ($29,195 MSRP.). The base LX model has a long list of standard features, including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Sport trim level adds larger 18-inch wheels, sports pedals, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX version includes a sunroof, heated front seats, and keyless entry with a push-button start. Finally, the top-of-the-line EX-L model adds leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Safety: All three trim levels have standard safety features such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. These safety features are designed to help keep drivers and passengers safe on the road and give them more peace of mind.

Fuel Economy: Built on the same platform as the Honda Civic, the HR-V is wider and has a longer wheelbase, which provides a smoother ride. However, the 2023 Civic has an estimated fuel economy of up to 36 combined mpg, compared to 28 combined mpg for the HR-V.

Volvo’s 2024 RWD XC40 Recharge and RWD C40 Recharge Take Center Stage

I had a fantastic time in Volvo’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden to experience the 2024 RWD XC40 Recharge with a 293-mile electric range and the 2024 RWD C40 Recharge with a 297-mile electric range. The new RWDs are lighter, have faster charge times, and feature updated battery tech which equates to increased range. The revised powertrains are available in three variants, while the exterior features new 19″ aero alloy rims and two new paint options dubbed Cloud Blue and Vapour Grey Metallic.

Media guests test-drove the aerodynamic, luxury crossovers through the blissful landscapes of the safe-minded and health-conscious country for extensive insight into the all-electric RWD platform both vehicles share. Built at Volvo’s facility in Gent, Belgium, the pair of Recharges are the first Volvos in 25 years available in the United States with rear-wheel drive. The small, single electric motor (second generation) developed in-house in Sweden is placed on the rear axle.  I would have chosen FWD for this model, but Volvo engineers stated that its electric technologies and software provide the necessary traction when required. Moreover, the weight allocation of the vehicle due to the even distribution of the battery and motor significantly improves rear traction.

“These updates are another big step in our work towards becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030,” said Javier Varela, chief operating officer and deputy chief executive at Volvo Cars. “Range and charging times are new key factors for more and more of our customers, and these improvements make our fully electric models even more attractive than they already were.”

Also in Sweden, we received a deep dive into the Intelligent Tech of the advanced 2024 Volvo EX90 which inherits a plethora of e-mobility systems and EV innovations. The 7-passenger SUV achieves 300 emission-free miles from a 111 kWh battery pack and dual-motor powertrain. Overall, the “Green to the Extreme” international escape into the Scandic way of life helped me better understand Volvo’s electrification journey. An ambitious transformation plan will lead to complete electrification of its vehicles by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040. The Recharges additionally incorporate a leather-free interior that reduces weight and decreases the company’s carbon footprint. The Microtech, a suede-like fabric, has quality textures made from recycled PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests, and wine bottle corks. Riding quietly and efficiently in the bubble-shaped C40 Recharge was fun and breathtaking as I galloped the meandering roads through enchanting valleys and around the multitude of lakes in the picturesque countryside. The aerodynamic C40 Recharge features a black glass roof, dual tailgate spoilers, black lower body surround, and a unique closed grille. Its vigor was impressive when calling upon the 248-horsepower from the e-motor, and the 297-mile drive range from its 82 kWh battery was plenty for touring Gothenburg. Both Recharges can restore energy from 10% to 80% in roughly 28 minutes with DC Fast Charging up to 200 kW when running low. Keep in mind that the current twin motor variants are all-wheel drive (AWD) with a range of 257 miles for the C40 Recharge Twin (AWD) and 254 miles for the XC40 Recharge Twin (AWD). More importantly, Volvo modulates performance characteristics with software updates such as steering or suspension handling so owners will always have the most remarkable abilities at their disposal.

Inside, the cockpit is empowered by a 9” touchscreen display and Google’s ecosystem that integrates Google Navigation, Google Calendar, Google Play for music and talk shows, and Google Assistant to support natural speech. For example, say, “Hey Google,” to instruct the system on your destination and it will input the data seamlessly. The updated multimedia system also reduces the complexity and distraction of Volvo’s prior system. Since the Swedes love reggae music, I tuned into Bob Marley to catch the vibe as the melody flowed from the impressive Harman/ Kardon audio system. The interior is roomy, effervescent, and stylish, especially the handcrafted Crystal gear knob.

From a charging perspective, there are three levels to consider to keep your C40 or XC40 Recharge ready for action. Level 1 is the slowest at three to five miles of energy recuperation per hour and utilizes your home’s 110V outlets. A full charge can take up to 60 hours or more depending on your vehicle’s battery pack size. Level 2 is the most convenient since charging can occur at home at 15 to 37 miles an hour from a 240V unit like the ChargePoint Home Flex. EV life has been effortless since I installed this model at my residence. Public charging stations are rapidly increasing and feature Level 2 and Level 3 stations. With Level 3 — also known as DC Fast Charging — you can expect energy restoration from 25 kWh to 350 kWh in relatively short spurts.

After exploring its features and capabilities, I must say that this vehicle will surely meet the cargo needs of both commercial fleets and business customers. Whether for business or commercial use, this luxury cargo van is large enough to hold just about anything.

With a sleek and modern design, the Mercedes Sprinter 2500 Cargo Van is equipped to handle any task that comes its way. The ample cargo space provides enough room for many types of equipment and gear. It has impressive features, like a rearview camera and lane departure warning, to make your driving experience safer and more comfortable. The van also has a powerful engine that delivers superior performance and efficiency.

The new four-cylinder turbo diesel uses direct injection to siphon more power with less fuel. It saves up to 18 percent more fuel than the six-cylinder. However, the 3.0-liter V6 is available as an option. It generates 188 horsepower with 325 lb-ft of torque.

Safety: Thankfully, there are a variety of safety features available for customizing or purchasing a Sprinter Cargo van. These features include proximity sensors, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings, and collision avoidance systems. Some models also include adaptive cruise control, rearview cameras, and even automatic emergency braking. However, the passenger van can be had for around $5000 more without the expense of purchasing ad installing aftermarket windows and seats.

The 2023 Toyota Venza hybrid is a two-row, mid-size crossover SUV that is ideal for drivers who want the convenience of an SUV without sacrificing performance or style. It is versatile and an ideal vehicle for families.

Power: The Venza shares the same powertrain as the RAV4 hybrid. All models are powered by a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine, three electric motors delivering 219 horsepower, and an Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission with Sequential Shift. Electronic on-demand all-wheel drive is standard.

The 2023 Venza was upgraded with a standard 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen. Additionally, for 2023, all Venza models come with the new Toyota Audio Multimedia system, upgraded USB ports with one USB Type-A and two USB Type-C ports, and an updated fourth-generation Qi wireless charger.

The 2023 Toyota Venza Limited, which I tested, has been upgraded from previous generations of Venza with a host of new features. The interior is well-appointed, with leather seats and a panoramic sunroof for added luxury. It also includes a JBL audio system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration.

Safety: The 2023 Toyota Venza Limited comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 for comprehensive protection on the road. This includes features such as Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist to help keep you safe.

Fuel Efficiency: The EPA rates the Venza at 40 city/37 highway mpg.

TSU Automotive Internship Concludes with Educational Tour of INFINITI’s Corporate Headquarters

It was a momentous afternoon of networking activities as The Driving Force HBCU automotive internship concluded with an impactful visit to INFINITI’s corporate headquarters (HQ) in Franklin, TN. Created for Tennessee State University (TSU) scholars, the Black Automotive Media Group (BAMG) hosted the tour for the group to meet corporate leaders and VPs such as Craig Keeys, Chandra Vasser, Keri Kelly, Lanae Jackson, and Kyle Bazemore for a deeper understanding of the Japanese automaker’s workplace environment and career opportunities.

BAMG’s multimedia internship exposed the TSU students to journalism, broadcast, advertising, and public relations subject matters concerning the mobility sector with a focus on INFINITI luxury vehicles like the QX60. Virtual interaction occurred weekly as the interns participated in various training activities taught by professional automotive journalists, publishers, and seasoned media producers. They also heard from INFINITI marketing and communication executives and were tasked to dialogue with each and report back with editorial summaries. The students were also assigned a case study to pinpoint INFINITI’s diversity efforts while offering additional solutions from a youthful perspective.

“It’s imperative for organizations to cultivate the next generation of minority leaders, and we are honored to be part of this internship program,” said Craig Keeys, group vice president INFINITI Americas. “The Driving Force internship at TSU gives students important opportunities to develop their skills and helps organizations like INFINITI to identify individuals who can excel within the company’s staff.”

At HQ, the TSU cohort was extraordinarily inquisitive and asked insightful questions regarding negotiating salaries, internship expectations, and team building. Chandra Vasser suggested that they construct a diverse core of individuals that complement them instead of bringing in members with equivalent skill sets. She also encouraged each to challenge themselves to be bold and hardworking and to see every project and commitment through to completion. A particular query wondered how INFINITI comes across as a premium auto brand without showcasing elitist symbolism. INFINITI marketing responded by stating how the department incorporates premium touchstones but do so while showcasing the human side of the brand with a feeling of attainability. In addition, they intend for potential owners to feel welcomed, which can be problematic in the luxury space.

To enhance the tour with a personal touch, a TSU Alumni panel discussed goals for success. At the same time, Human Resources provided directives on interviewing and flourishing at INFINITI as a new employee. The collaborative teaching injected into the student’s consciousness included the following:

  • Investing in your career early by writing down goals and working on them daily.
  • Being resilient and using any challenges to rise above.
  • Researching positions that are applicative and conducive to interests.
  • Relying on your network habitually by using the associates in your business life who hail from various industries or speakers who have spoken at your school.
  • Avoid speaking about your financial situation, including recent car or home purchases.
  • Matching your proficiencies to the job position and speaking eloquently about your passions.
  • Paying attention to body language. Are you engaged? Do you have critical competencies on your resume? Are you asking relative questions about the company?
  • Lastly, inquiring about the values and culture of the company to ascertain that it is an ideal fit for your career.

The educational objective is to continue expanding learning opportunities for HBCU students and focusing on pathways toward automotive communications. Everyone in BAMG is dedicated to the cause and devotes time and energy to ensuring The Driving Force internship flows like spring water down river beds. 2024 Lincoln Nautilus SUV Shines at NY Global Debut

“When it rains, it pours” was the scenic theme during the global debut of the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus at Iron23 located in the heart of New York City. VIP guests, media, and dealers were serenaded by the uplifting vibes of musician Karriem Riggins as the stately SUV rolled onto the stage, simultaneously showered by waterfalls descending from the sky. The new Nautilus ranks third in Lincoln’s lineup after the Navigator and Aviator and is completely redesigned from the ground up, a first since 2016.

Referred to as a “Sanctuary for the Senses,” Lincoln is leading into an era that celebrates the work of human ingenuity with its mid-sized premium Nautilus SUV. At the introduction, Lincoln president Dianne Craig and global design director Kemal Curic reveled in the evening excitement as the American automaker’s Centennial momentum has continued with stellar product unveils and exciting digital technologies to appease your driving needs. Owners of the Nautilus will enjoy a light bar that runs across the front fascia and through the signature hand-crafted grille, available H2 Pixel headlamps as well as all-new LED taillamps with animation, integrated dual trapezoidal exhaust tips, over-the-air updates through 5G connectivity, and an 11.1l” center touchscreen that centralizes the elongated upper display which extends from the passenger door to the driver’s door.

“For more than a century, Lincoln has been recognized for its exquisite design and craftsmanship, and as we look ahead to the future, we reimagined the cabin experience and what the sanctuary can become for our clients,” said Dianne Craig, president of Lincoln. “The 2024 Nautilus will elevate our portfolio and offer our global clients an all-new, compelling SUV with connected experiences and features that make it just as fun to drive as it is to relax in.”

Reimagined and engineered for Lincoln’s younger customer base, the Nautilus will be offered with both a gas and hybrid powertrain. The standard 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine features 250-horsepower, 275 lb.-ft. of torque, and pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The hybrid setup incorporates a 310-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine (HEV) and connects with a continuously variable automatic transmission featuring a 100 kW electric motor. An adaptive suspension, sensors that constantly monitor vehicle motion, body movement, steering, acceleration, and braking activities, and five drive modes (normal, conserve, excite, slippery, and deep conditions) complete the performance aspects of the Nautilus.

The elegant cabin will enthuse guests with crystal-inspired details; a piano key shifter, instrument panel toggles, and audio knob; and an immersive digital experience from the 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio package. 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV: Discovering the Vitality of Portugal with Electric Energy

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to Portugal for the international media drive of the all-new 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV which expands the fully-electric Mercedes-EQ brand by making it the second EV SUV in the portfolio. The German automaker has been on a role since introducing the EQS sedan a few years ago and now hosts a bevy of sustainable models to help reach its carbon-free goal while providing conscious owners with a variety of styles and sizes to choose from.

Based on the EQE sedan in positioning, the midsize SUV features a 90.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers a driving range of 279 miles for the RWD EQE. However, if you step up to the AWD 4MATIC then range decreases a bit to 269 miles. Our initial charge was well within reach of the destination from Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and largest city. The vibe along the Atlantic Coast was incredibly refreshing en route to Ericeira, a civil parish and seaside community on the Western Coast considered the surfing capital of Europe. The lifestyle of fellow citizens seemed perfect for eco-friendly vehicle ownership as pastel-hued buildings from the old town express vibrant energy, the hilly streets offer daily exercise, and the fresh foods provide healthy sustenance. Moreover, Portugal is a beautiful and hospitable country that set a vitalizing tone for our electric test drive.

The EQE SUV is the 4th electric model built on Mercedes-EQ’s new all-electric platform. The other three are the EQS and EQE sedans, as well as the EQS SUV. The EQB, which Automotive Rhythms evaluated last month, rides on a different platform. Three trims will include the $77,900 EQE 350+ SUV (288 hp / 417 lb-ft of torque), the $77,900 EQE 350 4MATIC SUV (288 hp / 564 lb-ft of torque), and the $89,500 EQE 500 4MATIC SUV (402 hp / 633 lb-ft of torque). Each excludes the $1,150 destination and delivery fee.

The 4MATICs feature dual motors (front and rear axle) for increased system power. Additionally, the left steering wheel paddle engages “strong” energy recuperation and the right paddle gives the EQE SUV “normal” recovery. Various DYNAMIC SELECT modes from Eco to Sport customize the driving style and energy savings. For example, the front engine disconnects in ECO or Comfort mode to preserve energy. There is also a new OFF-ROAD mode (4MATIC models) for obvious reasons, which we tried out on a few rocky beaches. Though, the suspension felt wavy on the trail and not as confident as expected. But I’m sure the upgraded AIRMATIC Air Suspension with Adaptive Damping System would handle that matter.

Riding on 19″ wheels, our vehicle was super smooth, quiet as a pin drop, and quick. Not ultra-fast in acceleration, but the EQE SUV is ideally suited for family lifestyle tasks. Maneuvering performance stems from the “10-Degree Rear-Axle steering system” and optional design cues include wide running boards. And though it is smaller than the EQS SUV, inside the evolutionary cabin my 6’7″ drive partner Brian Armstead and I were extremely comfortable. Also, a new heat pump supplies advanced thermal capabilities by utilizing wasted battery heat to warm the cabin and help increase driving range.

Like all EQ models, the interior is simultaneously divine and technological. Mercedes-EQ offers features and capabilities that you never knew you required. It begins with the highly vivid MBUX multimedia system with Navigation, an incredibly detailed Head-up Display, a 12.8” Center OLED Touchscreen, and a 12.3” Instrument Cluster. The only element I am not a fan of is the Augmented Video for Navigation which shows you the actual imagery of your surroundings. For vegans like myself, the MB-Tex upholstery is leather-free including the seats and steering wheel. For audiophiles, an extraordinary Burmester 3D Sound system with Dolby Atmos and a 360-degree sound experience takes the audio experience to a planetary level. Just pump up the volume from Wu-Tang Clan’s (Ghostface) Daytona 500 featuring Raekwon and Cappadonna. The RZA’s profound stream of beats never sounded better.

Further EQE SUV  enhancements include 64-color ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps with Active Highbeam Assist, a fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication, massaging seats, 4-Zone Climate Control and Active Fragrance, and a 100w USB-C package. To stylize your EQE SUV on another level, upgrade to the optional AMG Line and receive unique 21″ AMG rims, a sporty rear diffuser, a sportier front bumper, a flat bottom AMG steering wheel, AMG pedals and floor mats, and illuminated door sills.

A few EQE SUV safety packages to keep you protected on the road include Driver Assistance Package with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping, Blind Spot Assist, and PRE-SAFE PLUS including PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Active Brake Assist, and PARKTRONIC with Surround View System.

Mercedes-EQ has a partnership with ChargePoint with a recent announcement of a new charging network available to all EV drivers, not just Mercedes owners. The rollout begins this year in North America and includes MN8 Energy. Completion is expected by 2027 and will offer 400 hubs with more than 2,500 Level 3 chargers. When completed, premium charging hubs will be located in highway proximities and metropolitan areas. Expect four to 12 chargers at standard locations and up to 30 at busy junctions. Moreover, EV owners will complete 80% of their charging at home using a 240V Level 2 charger. Therefore, a home installation setup like the ChargePoint Home Flex is best.

In typical German fashion, the EQE SUV will compete directly with other German compatriots such as the BMW iX SUV and Audi e-tron SUV. Built in Alabama and available this spring, the new Mercedes-EQ continues to advance the narrative of a carbon-free future.
