Toyota re-introduces a faster GR86 in 2022 that was fully rebuilt for sports car enthusiasts. The agile roadster offers a premium quality interior and agile performance that is more fun to drive than the previous model.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 is the second sports car under Toyota’s Gazoo Racing label, along with the GR Supra. Formerly called the GT86, the GR86 replaces the Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S sports cars.

The GR86 is affordable, starting under $30,000, and competes with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mini Cooper, Subaru BRZ, and Hyundai Veloster. However, the GR86, in its second generation, was developed in conjunction with the Subaru BRZ. It is completely redesigned with 22 more horses under the hood than the previous model.

Power: The GR86 gets 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft of torque from a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder boxer engine built by Subaru.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 features a standard 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7.0-inch digital display which can be configured in Normal, Sport, or Track modes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available in all models. The Base model comes with a six-speaker stereo, and the Premium model includes eight speakers.

The rear-wheel-drive GR86 is fully re-engineered for maximum performance and handling. Like the Subaru BRZ, power comes from a mid-range engine with a standard manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic.

Since it was just relaunched this year, the only change in 2023 is a GR86 Special Edition model, a limited edition with only 860 available units. The 2023 Special Edition GR86 has premium features, special paint, b-pilar racing stripes, 18-inch alloy wheels, and GR cat-back exhaust with black chrome tips.

Models/Pricing: Only three trim levels are offered, which include: GR86 Base ($27,900), GR86 Premium ($30,500 MSRP), and GR86 10th Anniversary Special Edition ($35,880).

All models deliver excellent sports performance. The Base comes with a cloth interior, and the premium model adds more luxury features like heated leather-trimmed sport seats, a rear spoiler, aluminum pedal covers, adaptive LED headlights, and 18-inch Michelin Pilot Sport tires,

Fuel Economy: The 2022 Toyota Base GR86 is rated at 20 city/27 highway mpg and 22 combined. The Premium model averages 21 city/31 highway mpg. Mileage varies depending on the manual or automatic transmission.
